Kutiman Makes YouTube Cool Again

Back in the summer of 2007, when we first posted Kutiman’s “Music Is Ruling My World” single, we noted his obviously impressive, and slightly compulsive mastery of funk in the few short years it’d been since he took up playing it. He has now completely frightened us with his obsession by creating these amazing new Thru-You videos. Kutiman has taken bits of found YouTubes and assembled an all-star band of internet music instructors, badass little kids and random crazy dudes in their apartments. We’ve put up one of our favorites of the bunch — “Mother of All Funk Chords” — but they are all worth spending a little piece of your day on. And as Kutiman says, “Check out the credits for each video — you might find yourself…”

RCRD LBL: Kutiman, “No Reason For You” + “Music Is Ruling My World”

After listening to a couple songs by Kutiman, the Israeli jam band/psych funk mastermind who we posted about in the summer of 2007, we know that, whether he becomes the opening act for the Disco Biscuits’ tour of the Tel Aviv or some sort of post-peace accord Sly Stone, people somewhere someday will be doing that arm-wave dance to his music out of pure joy. RCRD LBL has two of his songs up for download: “Music is Ruling My World,” the aforementioned 2007 song (video here) and “No Reason For You,” which could follow some of the smoother tracks on Dungen’s 4.

Video: Kutiman f. Karolina, “Music Is Ruling My World”

We posted the audio for “Music Is Ruling My World” way back in July, jammed it during many of our late summer three marg lunches, and have since made several dozen failed attempts to convince FADER honchos to open a beach office in Tel Aviv. Maybe it was because we brought it up after three margs. Kutiman, in the meantime, has made a video for the song with director Yotam Gendelman and is prepping the US release of his self-titled album on February 12th. Make sure to get it and if you happen to be in Tel Aviv on February 2nd, check him with Karolina and DJ Sabbo as they premiere their new soundsystem opening for Erykah Badu.
