FADER TV: LA Is A Nice Place To Live #9

On each episode of FADER TV’s LA Is A Nice Place To Live, the West Coast staff takes in some of the city’s culture and fun good times. We recently walked two blocks from the Los Angeles office to catch Little Boots‘ first L.A. performance at no other than the hipster mecca known as Cinespace. While we weren’t surprised Little Boots won over the crowd with her irresistible energy and sporadic turns at the tambourine, the crowd itself did catch us off guard. Who knew that somewhere there was a nexus between the Cobrasnake crowd and dudes that look like bank tellers? Little Boots is touring her homeland now but will return for some very special shows at SXSW in March.

FADER TV’s LA Is A Nice Place To Live #8

On each episode of FADER TV’s LA Is A Nice Place To Live, the West Coast staff takes in some of the city’s culture and fun good times. This episode finds the crew crossing the Orange Curtain to check out The Crosby in Santa Ana, simultaneously pushing the limits of their video camera and semantics. The Crosby is partly owned by Free the Robots, who this past Friday night did a beat set along with Los Angeles proper’s Daedelus. While both acts pulled off awesome sets, we have to admit that our favorite part of the night was the one-two punch of Stella and cajun shrimp pizza, which we enjoyed three feet away from where Daedelus was playing Brain Age.

FADER TV: LA Is A Nice Place To Live (With Nite Jewel)

On each episode of FADER TV’s LA Is A Nice Place To Live, the West Coast staff takes in some of the city’s culture and fun good times. Our first installment of 2009 has the crew going to Tiny Creatures for their official closing event. The nondescript storefront on Alvarado has hosted art and music events for the past three years, and we say goodbye to it with a warm hug and a meaningful pat on the back. Los Angeles’ own Nite Jewel also dropped by for a short set for a crowd too hemmed in by weird installations from the likes of Hedi El Kholti and Rachel Detroit to do much more than tap their feet. On any other day, we would have been bummed out about Nite Jewel making the tiny house P.A. system implode, but on this particular night it just seemed too apt and awesome to bring us down.

FADER TV: LA Is A Nice Place To Live #5

On each episode of FADER TV’s LA Is A Nice Place To Live, the West Coast staff takes in some of the city’s culture and fun good times. This week, we endured some heavy college football-related traffic to see the recently opened GOOD space on Melrose and to check out some of the programs that are part of their GOOD December program. While we missed the highly anticipated tamale-making workshop, we were able to learn how to make almond butter from one of the members of blackblack before catching one of Lucky Dragons‘ participatory performances. Then, with the INTO INFINITY audio-visual exhibition, dublab and Creative Commons gave our mind something to get lost in . With all the positive vibes and craftwork in this episode, you could probably call it, “The LA Staff Gets Soft,” and we’re cool with that…but only for today.

FADER TV: LA Is A Nice Place To Live #4

On each episode of FADER TV’s LA Is A Nice Place To Live, the West Coast staff takes in some of the city’s culture and fun good times. For this episode, we caught up with Abe Vigoda at their homecoming show at The Smell with Vivian Girls and Love Is All. During a break from eating pizza, they talked about their recent stint on Diplo’s Mad Decent tour and their recent move to Los Angeles from the Inland Empire suburb of Chino. It’s a good thing we interviewed them before their set, we think they killed our camera’s mic.

On each episode of FADER TV’s LA Is A Nice Place To Live, the West Coast staff takes in some of the city’s culture and fun good times. This week, we head over to Hope Gallery in Echo Park for their TV Books exhibition. While there, we chatted (but IRL) a bit with Tim Barber about how TV Books relates to his Tiny Vices project and about his on-demand approach to the book publishing game. We’d call it a weird night, not because of the art on the walls (that was expected), but because of the surprisingly strong baby and dog turnout.

While there, we chatted a bit with the Ed Banger crew and co-director Romain Gavras about the film and Los Angeles while avoiding the Halloween traffic.
