Freeload: Ladyhawke, “My Delirium (Fan Death Remix)”
- story THE FADER
When you pick up the next issue of The FADER you will see a Gen F on Vancouver’s death disco duo Fan Death—comprised of Dandilion Wind Opaine and Marta Jaciubek-McKeever— whose single “Veronica’s Veil” has been a hit on our Friday radio show of late. They’ve turned Ladyhawke’s originally pretty poppy jawn (video above) into a total Moroder nightmare, and we are recommending it as a soundtrack for watching the Dow plummet… makes it feel more romantic.

“Epically hummable” is our basic impression of Ladyhawke’s music, but we also like the watercolor paintings that comprise all her visuals. So much so that, for the upcoming FADER 58 (drops 11/25!), we interviewed the artist and Ladyhawke’s former roommate, the inimitable Sarah Larnach, for our Sleeves column. When we talked to her on the phone she was in London and had just finished touching up this video for “My Delirium.” Behind the scenes info: she painted all the panels, then a team of dudes somehow animated them.

There are definitely pluses to living in New York, but also there are minuses like not being able to have band practice in your dad’s garage with your trebley Ibanez guitar starter set. We’re not sure if New Zealand’s Ladyhawke or Australia’s Canyons ever really got the chance to move a lawnmower to set up a drum set, but after listening to this it sounds like they did. Think about it, is it really that hard to picture dudes plugging in their guitars and being confused about if they like disco, but going for it anyway? We can totally picture Canyons calling their mom from the kitchen to have her come in with some Tang and also to do some hand claps because it’s what would really pull the song together.

We still don’t know much about Ladyhawke (not the bearded Vancouver dudes), other than that she is from New Zealand and makes songs that sound like when our babysitter made us go with her to the DMV and she failed the driving test and we made fun of her for it (whoops!) To be more specific though, Ladyhawke is on some serious Pat Benatar shit and she is from New Zealand. What is that about?
