Stricken City at The Levi’s/FADER Fort
- story THE FADER
We’re so enamored of the shambolic harmonies on Stricken City’s debut, Songs About People I Know, but they’re meant to be buzzy and loud, so while we were beyond psyched, we weren’t sure what would go down when the lovely Londoners dropped by Room 501 for a song at the Levi’s®/FADER Fort suite at Ace Hotel New York. But they’re game: they brought amps, turned down low, and proceeded to stoke us all the way with a quietly electrified performance of “Small Things.” Consequently, we are going to invite them to every slumber party we throw henceforth.
Pill Live at The Levi’s/FADER Fort NYC
- story THE FADER
By the time Pill took the stage at the Levi’s®/FADER Fort on Saturday, everyone had already sweated out any and all Budweiser or Southern Comfort they’d attempted to consume. So when you watch the audience going loco in this live performance of Pill’s anthem “Trap Goin Ham,” just know that you can’t blame their enthusiasm on the alcohol. Blame it on the unbridled charisma of one of the best rappers out of the A, and the rad dude posse alongside him (including Freddie Gibbs, who’d performed with him earlier in the night). And when FADER editor Felipe Delerme sprayed beer on the dancefloor like he was Puff with Moet in ‘96, he was stone cold sober, and no one was even mad because it was the perfect thing to do right at that moment. When in doubt, go ham.

An Interview With Best Coast at The Levi’s/FADER Fort NYC
- story THE FADER
Around this time last year, Bethany Cosentino was a young, budding intern here at The FADER, punching in her time card every day like the rest of us. Today she goes by the name of Best Coast, has blonde hair, lives in sunny Southern California (which she constantly dares to flaunt in front of our East Coast-loving faces), and is pretty much the coolest girl we know. Alex Frank, resident style assistant, at least thinks so. And yesterday, between the buzz and the shows and more buzz, Alex got to interview his best friend and former intern buddy on camera in our swanky room at the Ace Hotel, where we’re staging this year’s Levi’s®/FADER Fort during CMJ.

FADER TV: Big Boi on Chico Dusty, Piranhas and Outkast
- story THE FADER
Big Boi is the only three-time FADER cover star, appearing with Andre 3K on #5 and #18 and with Killer Mike on #32 for our Purple Ribbon story. Barring another cover for Kanye or the White Stripes—not out of the question—it would be safe to say Big Boi is FADER’s #1 dude, so we were bummed when he couldn’t play the Levi’s®/FADER Fort last month because of wild time constraints. He did, however, have a moment to come sit with us and discuss what, exactly, is going on with his long-awaited solo joint Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty, the future of OutKast and the pirahna movie he’s probably not starring in.
FADER TV: Jadakiss on “The Last Kiss”
- story THE FADER
Back in the Mesozoic, in mid-March 2009 AD, when we were in Austin, Jadakiss played a phenomenal show at the Levi’s®/FADER Fort. Mere minutes before that happened, we were backstage in a trailer with neon-painted doors glued all over to it talking to him about his new album, The Last Kiss, which dropped this week! Watch Kiss talking about collabos, what he was thinking the last five years since his last album, and previewing his upcoming reality show, in which he tries to find a new DJ whilst he hilariously and goodnaturedly clowns on his current one.

FADER TV: Amazing Baby, “Pump Your Brakes” (Live at The Levi’s®/FADER Fort)
- story THE FADER
In a week during which they played the extravagant New York Topshop opening parties with Mark Ronson hosting and crazy celebrities attending, we are choosing to reminisce back to the good old days of two weeks ago when Amazing Baby played the simple, everymanned Levi’s®/FADER Fort. Watch the boys play the first song we ever posted by them, “Pump Your Brakes.”

FADER TV: Francis & the Lights, “A Modern Promise” (Live at the Levi’s®/FADER Fort)”
- story THE FADER
We dig Oscar Wilde, but we SUPER dig him when he is doing the James Brown dance. Francis Starlite is the best of both worlds: does the special Wilde pose with the hair in photos, does the hotchacha on stage, not to mention the Lights’ supreme excellence in fulfilling the pinnacle of our wildest pop-funk fantasies. At The Levi’s®/FADER Fort in Austin during their awesome performance of “A Modern Promise,” we were in a heated debate over who dances/danced better: Francis Starlite, David Byrne or Ian Curtis from Joy Division? Francis won and the dude we placed the bet with lost $2 and a Budweiser.

FADER TV: Styles P f. Jadakiss, “Good Times (I Get High)” (Live at The Levi’s®/FADER Fort)
- story THE FADER
We’re not gonna try to explain how or why, but when Styles P joined Jadakiss onstage at The Levi’s®/FADER Fort for this lively rendition of SP’s 2002 weed anthem, the venue developed its own peculiar weather pattern blocking out the sun and making us feel kind of dizzy. We got over it though and ate 19 bags of pistachios. Clouds make us so hungry.

FADER TV: Micachu Interviewed by Grizzly Bear at The Levis®/FADER Fort
- story THE FADER
We were scheduled to interview Micachu and The Shapes after they played The Levi’s®/FADER Fort, but after Grizzly Bear’s Ed Droste and Chris Taylor told us how much they Loved (capital L) their music, we knew we had to make an introduction. This resulted in a half-hour videotaped conversation about music school, touring, rappers, and the origins/playfulness of their respective band names. We condensed the best parts here so you can behold the glory of two FADER faves in intimate mind-melding zone. Also, do you think we should hire Chris Taylor as an interviewer? We are seriously considering it.
FADER TV: Little Boots, “Meddle” (Live at the Levi’s®/FADER Fort)
- story THE FADER
No style stranger, former FADER cover star Little Boots showed up at The Levi’s®/FADER Fort wearing an elegant sheath in an eggplant shade and five-inch heels—and, if you count her party-emitting, lite-brite sequencer, her accessories game was on point. Here, she performs her crowd-detonating megahit “Meddle”—and without like, 14,000 Dutch remixers on the internet trying to trance it out, it was no mess, no rave, just pure unadulterated disco Boots. We like it like that.
