Young Money f. Lloyd, “Bed Rock” MP3

“Bed Rock” doesn’t quite have the same magic as “Every Girl,” even though it’s rumored to be the first official single from the Young Money album, but having Minaj on here putting all these boys in their places is definitely something that was missing on its Young Money predecessor. As FADER editor Felipe Delerme learned recently, Nikki Nicki has a knack for making grown men nervous. If anyone knows the producer of the beat, drop the name in the comments.

We’re pretty receptive when Lloyd gives us advice, i.e. tells to “get it shawty.” Now he is recommending that we “do the damn thing” over a sweaty, palm tree-esque track produced by J.Lack (the “Get it Shawty” producer and also Usher’s little brother). He does a little cell phone rap at the end, too, and his voice is like buttercream frosting. How is Lloyd not the Michael Jackson of the oughties? Seriously, look at this album cover.

Continuing the shout-outs to underappreciated R&B sangers on the blog, can we talk about how the new Lloyd album is secretly dope? Don’t let the bait-and-switch lead single “Girls Around The World” and it’s tired Rakim sample fool you. Lessons In Love is filled with spacey loverboy jams (shit, the iTunes bonus cut is even called “Love Spaceship”) and echo-ed out electronic production flourishes. It’s the logical progression from “Get It Shawty” on his last album, which, lets be honest, begat the entire “Sensual Seduction” era of vapor-light, uptempo club production. Respect the architect! If Lloyd wasn’t still best known as the shirtless teenager on Ja Rule’s label, people would be tripping over themselves to talk it up. Ah well. At least we still have the blippy and awesome “I’m Wit It” (courtesy of Usher’s lil bro and “Get It Shawty” mastermind J-Lack) for the secret stash.

Long overdue post alert! Other than that time he accidentally apppeared in our Georgia Girls feature (dude was shopping at Greenbriar Mall at the time), and our occasional Vannessa Carlton punditry and shout-outs to the cameo genius of Dre 3K, there’s been precious little talk about Lloyd over at Casa FADER. Kinna wrote off his first album cause he looked like a Street Fighter 2 villain on the cover, but this new LP has some cuts on it, namely the current single, “Get It Shawty,” a floating, uptempo number produced by Usher’s little brother. This past weekend, NYC radio DJs were going in Aquaman style with it (mixing into Diddy and Keyshia Cole’s almost-sick-of-this-but-still-pretty-great “Last Night” for good measure), and we were reminded not only of how good “Get It Shawty” is, but realized the uncanny vocal similarites between Lloyd and Felly from Technotronic. Admit it, when he goes “I WAAANT…” on the chorus, you instinctvely go “A PLAAACE, TO STAAAY…” The point of all this blabbering? It’s spring time, and we won’t be mad if this song ends up soundtracking it.
