Style TV: Patrik Ervell F/W ‘09

Even if menswear designer Patrik Ervell wasn’t being featured in F60 (which he is) and even if he weren’t an old friend of mine (which he is), I’d still be excited to attend his runway show every season. He makes impeccable, forward-thinking menswear and his shows are always a beautifully-staged affair. This season he upped his game with finely-tailored suits and jackets partnered with nearly-transparent hoodies, space-age fake fur derived from real fur (we still haven’t figured out how that works, but it doesn’t hurt or bum out the animals, apparently), and — surprise! — a woman walking the runway. The luminous show was almost inspiring enough to make me forget that I was single on Valentines day. Almost.

FADER TV: Breaking Bread with OJ Da Juiceman

For our money, no one talks trapping like OJ Da Juiceman. Maybe it’s because NYC doesn’t have actual traps (unless you count the Whole Foods on Bowery) or maybe it’s that having permanent gold fronts since the age of 16 puts you in a whole different category of lifestyle commitment. Whatever the case, we were delighted to share a meal with young Juice Man on this, his latest (yet only his fourth) trip to New York, to talk about Gucci Mane, his impending debut, and his stupidfruitycrazyswag. Aye! (Special thanks to Jaques for hosting)

FADER TV: Busta Rhymes Talks “Arab Money” and His Debt to Weed

Busta Rhymes is still pretty huge. We say that not to reference the leftover dieselness from his last album push, but to acknowledge that after a storied career of some eighteen plus years, he’s easily one of the most world renowned, if not world adored rappers alive. His next album Blessed, originally scheduled to release this year, has been pushed back to March on the strength of his latest single “Arab Money.” The song seems to have stirred up just as much controversy as it has iTunes sales, but before this interview, we had yet to hear Busta explain exactly why, and how, someone might be getting “Arab Money.”

FADER TV: The Super Powers Of Izza Kizza

When Izza Kizza raps he is basically a cartoon character jumbling words on top of each other, altering his voice and flow and switching from hypnotic monotone to wildly animated every couple of seconds. We decided to take him to a comic book store and have him talk about whatever he found in there. It turns out that Izza Kizza is actually not a very big comics fan, but he does want a lot of super powers (basically all of them), and he does love Family Guy enough to buy a set of toys before leaving the store. After you watch the video, download “Hello,” below, which channels L.O.N.S. era Busta Rhymes and flips it for 2008 over a glitchy beat that sounds like it could have come from that one scene in Blade where blood rains out of the sprinklers at the weird goth club. “Hello” is from the upcoming Kizza mixtape Kizzaland mixed by FADER friend Nick Catchdubs.

FADER TV: Hanging Out With Glass Candy

For our FADER 53 cover, we headed to Portland and hung with the elusive and awesome Glass Candy. Above check out Glass Candy beatmaker and Italians Do It Better mastermind Johnny Jewel showing us around his studio and music, and then make the jump to see Ida No’s crazy house with lots of clothes, a cat that is everywhere and uh, a weird ventriloquist dummy. Keep hitting up thefader.com for T Cole Rachel’s feature on Glass Candy from F53, presented here for free in just a bit.
