Max Tundra must have been a child actor on the set of Amadeus and Pretty in Pink. He sounds both absurdly Eighties and anciently orchestral. It doesn’t hurt that his voice never drops lower than the pitch of an eight-year-old girl. “Which Song” is Casio glee meets falsetto pangs and the video for “Will Get Fooled Again” has a pimple that pusses and is a person. The back of this dude’s mind must be gnarly. Catch him on tour with the Junior Boys soon, but if you can’t make that, catch him singing Mariah Carey.

Beloved British electronic sensation Max Tundra (also known as Ben Jacobs) likes to make videos the same way that he likes to make music: experimentally and with a hilarious lo-fi midi track supporting his occasional high-pitched vocals. So when we visited a Koreatown karaoke booth with an unlimited amount of midi pop riffs, Jacobs was in his element. From Vanessa Carlton to Queen, he sang his little heart out and only occasionally asked that we get him a glass of water. But the performance that stuck out the most, maybe because it’s inauguration day and because the lyrics sublimely seem to work, was Mariah Carey’s “Vision of Love.” It took so long, still I believed, somehow the one that I needed, would find me eventually. Okay, maybe it’s a stretch, but here’s Max Tundra wailing it.

“Playboy” was definitely one of our favorite songs on Hot Chip’s debut Coming on Strong, but it came out so long ago that we didn’t even have a website then and couldn’t write about it on the internet like everyone else, though we did get our chance in print. Fortunately for us, Domino just put up a free download of Max Tundra’s new cover of “Playboy,” so we can finally say Hey, have you guys heard this song “Playboy”? It’s one of our favorites on Hot Chip’s new album Coming on Strong. Maybe Max Tundra will cover it someday and make it just a little bit weirder, that’d be alright.
