We Make it Good Mix Series v. 10: Morgan Geist
- story Sam Hockley-Smith
For the latest version of the WMIG x FADER Presents We Make it Good Mix Series, Morgan Geist of Metro Area/Environ/Unclassics and New Jersey fame goes far out into the cosmos and comes back with an astoundingly tight selection of rare and seminal disco, but we’ll let him explain the inspiration himself:
This little mix is obviously inspired by the original Cosmic DJs (Baldelli,
Loda) and innovative DJs of (or nearer to) my own generation, like DJ Harvey
and Daniel Wang. I made sure to include some records that I thought
I “discovered” on my own, only to hear them played by other (better) DJs who
probably knew about them a lot longer than I did. Parallel evolution is a
bitch, but I didn’t want to abandon these beloved tracks just because they
were “marked” by another DJ. For example, most DJs who know the Transfer
Station Blue track associate it with Sarcastic Disco, the infamous and
beautiful Harvey mix – yet I believe I got my first copy of it from my
departed friend, Barry Lederer, and associate it with digging and listening
and learning in his dusty old apartment on 24th Street in Manhattan. I find
Harvey inspirational, but don’t want my own Barry-nostalgia supplanted. I
realize it sounds corny, but sometimes you have to reclaim music that is
important to you, and that’s what a lot of this mix is about for me.

FADER TV: Studio Time With Morgan Geist
- story THE FADER
Way out in Woodhaven, Queens, in the same building that many bar scenes from Goodfellas were filmed, Morgan Geist has just moved into a new studio. We visited him there to discuss his new solo album, Double Night Time, which he made with some vocal assistance from Jeremy Greenspan of Junior Boys. Geist, half of production and DJ duo Metro Area, is certainly familiar with what makes positive electronic music, but for Double Night Time he took that electronic charge and lulled it, not by creating anything downtempo or overly sappy, but by injecting the music with just a tiny bit of pain. He talks about making the album, pop music and a lot of expensive old equipment.

Audio: Morgan Geist f. Jeremy Greenspan (Junior Boys), “Most of All”
- story THE FADER
This song was originally released as the A-side of a 12″ on Morgan Geist’s Environ label two years ago, but we’ve just been given it in advance of Geist’s forthcoming album Double Night Time, which has been in steady rotation since we got it. It’s his first album in nearly a decade, after some time focusing on Metro Area with Darshan Jesrani, and along with that 12″s B-side, “Skyblue Pink”, the album is full of super poppy, almost r&b-ish lite jams that, if we did this kind of thing, would be perfect for sipping froo-froos in an infinity pool somewhere really expensive. Or you can just rock it while you soak your buns in a puddle. It’s an album that spans the divide between New York’s two classes: Ballers Out of Control and Everyone Else. It comes out in October, but you can catch Geist and his Environ bros maxing at PS 1 in Queens in a few weeks if you can’t wait that long.
