NYC: Theo Mercier Opening Show

The fantastical French artist Theo Mercier is opening “Oil Now” at the Envoy Gallery in NYC tonight, and it looks to be a feat of awesome surrealism: crazily pasted photos, painted-on collages, and installation works made with stuff he found at flea markets and on the street. Mercier has worked with forward-thinking designer Bernard Wilhelm and Matthew Barney, who we’re assuming you’ve heard of. Go read this interview with Mercier on his friend Diane Pernet’s site, where you can also see his pretty epic collage of a seagull landing on a giant hamburger while a wave crashes behind it.

Cam’ron and His Visor Break Our Minds

Last night was the much-anticipated, sold-out NYC RETURN OF KILLA FUCKING CAM’RON, and despite a soundsystem that sounded like the boombox in our bathroom, it was definitely a fête fit for a dude who’s been hibernating in Jersey for far too long. It was also a proper reminder that Cam is one of the ridiculously best rappers alive, particularly for the first half of his set when he artfully, forcefully, elegantly jammed through Roc classics and Purple hits: Is “Get ‘Em Girls” not a masterpiece of wordplay? Is “Down and Out” not one of the best tracks Kanye ever produced? Then some Z-level Dipset dude in a jean jacket came out for a couple of tracks and we went to the bathroom. When we returned, Cam was running through songs from his new album, Crime Pays, like “I Used to Get it in Ohio,” which is instant nu-classic Killa. It was sort of weird when he performed “Bottom of the Pussy Hole” with his mother onstage, but then, it wouldn’t be a Cam’ron show without an awkward moment and/or some sort of morally obtuse hatefuckery. Shout out to 2005! He brought out Byrdlady for the finale, “Cookies and Applejuice,” she is taller than he is and looks like she could take him in a fistfight which is partly why we think he fux with her. The set was perfectly brief—though we would’ve settled for another hour if it meant a Dipset reunion or a Gucci Mane cameo—and while we wished the track he dedicated to the ladies had been “Daydreamin’” instead of “Suck it or Not,” New York was clearly having it. Forty-two million Flipcams captured every moment. Also, Cam was wearing a RED LOUIS VUITTON VISOR WITH THAT LOUIS CHECKER PRINT SCARF THING. VISOR! Check the video to steal his ‘99 Eminem/golf coach/Loveparade steez and watch “Get Em Girls.”

NYC: Knyfe Hyts 4/20 Show/Release Party!

We first heard about Knyfe Hyts a couple years ago, we were record shopping at Mondo Kim’s on St. Mark’s (RIP) where Knyfe Hyts mondokind Shah Motia used to work, and he was like “Yeah I have this new band, we only play weird messed up sets at like 4 am,” leading us to believe they were the definition of afterparty weirdo stoner rave invocations. Fast forward two years to 4/20/09: Knyfe Hyts is finally releasing a record, “Screamin Lov” b/w “We Go Wanderin” on Dick Move Records (of course). It is one of those “EVENTS” the television fronts about having the whole time because there are only 100 copies of said LP in existence and will not be released outside their show in FIVE MOVEMENTS, composer style, tonight in Williamsburg at the Monster Island Basement! MYSTICAL DUDES! A compendium of info/address after the jump.

On The Street: Duplicity

With spring approaching (although slightly dubious with NYC’s flurry weather today), waves of color have started to wash over our wardrobes. Lately, those punctuated pinks seem a little less intimidating and the grassy greens a little less hairy. Where it really starts to get interesting is in the style execution of our friends and foes. Who knew that a girl in a soft mauve wrap and an updo would fit so smoothly next to a cherry red motorcycle jacket and a power puff? It’s enough to make you suit up next to strangers, because they may be your best accessory yet.

A-Trak Does Not Sleep, Ever

Perhaps you already surmised A-Trak is one of those people who can subsist on <1 hour of sleep per night, but he is about to exceed all our scientific expectations. hopefully, without going Altered States on us (because, let’s face it, no one looks good with full body hair [sci fi nerd inside joke]). Monsieur Trak is embarking on the Infinity +1 tour with constant companion DJ Mehdi, kicking off this Saturday in NYC at Studio B with your boys Nick Catchdubs, Dave P and JDH. And because President Obama has ruled that no real world thing should ever occur without being documented on the internet, A-Trak is doing his patriotic duty as a Canadian in America by blogging it all on the INFINITY +1 TUMBLR where you can also win stuff because A-Trak is addicted to gambling. MEMO: one-off Tumblr accounts are the new statement shoe! Details and tour dates after the jump.

NYC: Outsider Art Fair

Martin Ramirez’s American Folk Art retrospective last year introduced us to one of the most jubilant and unfortunately marginalized artists of a collective American history. The idea of “outsider art” is a tenuous, loose and semi-spooky idea (outside of what? And who’s an insider?), but also spirited and without such brutal heft (Terence Koh, that white light hurts our eyes). If you are in New York this weekend and want to check the next coming of outsider art folks, go to the Puck Building (fun fact: Puck Building is aka the building the showed for when Grace on Will and Grace went to work) for the Outsider Art Fair. Check some images of the art after the jump.
