O’Spada “Ten Strikes (DAZE Remix)” MP3 + Video
- story Peter Macia
A friend who’s married to a beautiful Swedish woman recently explained to us that Scandinavians will openly explain their homelands to North Americans in the following relatable equation: Swedes are the Americans, Danes are the Mexicans and Norwegians are Canadian. And to clarify, “Stockholm does have a Vegas-y bimbo contingent.” We still haven’t quite figured out whether to be offended by any of that or not, but we like people from all of those places, so it can’t be bad? O’Spada are from Stockholm. Coincidentally, they make polished dance pop and the singer, Julie Spada, sounds kind of like Teena Marie. They also kind of sound like another smooth Swedish band we love, Fibes Oh Fibes. Throw a little Little Dragon in there, some candles and a nice glögg and you got yourself a ill grown and sexy date night.

O’Spada, “Ten Strikes” MP3
Really, Sweden? How is it possible that your citizens are so overflowing with soul? FADER faves O’Spada, fronted by the lovely-voiced Julia Spada, finally dropped another gem of extra glossy funk that keeps a live eye on the future with a house pulse but also isn’t scared to spark it up with some Sheila E. lace glove-age. As far as we can tell this song is about a dude who abuses his girl, which is both an intense topic for a super upbeat song and highly topical. Or maybe we’re just projecting from the amount of times we’ve had to incredulously defend Rihanna this week. Either way, track bangs.

Premiere: O’Spada, “Time (Suck Shaft RMX)” MP3
We’ve been obsessed with the glossy synths of Swedish group O’Spada, led by Stockholm vocalist Julia Spada, for a few months, although it seems like much longer considering we’ve played their single “Time” about 94,000 times since we first posted it. In that time, they hosted a remix contest for the song, and here we present Suck Shaft’s awesome winning entry: a glitchy retoucher with emphasis on the funkyass bass and a faint glimpse of disco in parts. The single also premiered on iTunes today with the second- and third-place remixes—a straight house mix and a cinematic, glorious shoegazy take—so definitely cop those, too. We’ll be waiting with bated breath for their album (supposedly due early 2010).
