Yung Joc f. Gucci Mane & OJ da Juiceman + Nicki Minaj “Birds” MP3

You can still catch us freaking out over Gucci Mane’s verse on yet another of Yung Joc’s location-specific singles a la “It’s Goin Down,” and then check out the Drumma Boi produced “Birds” below. It’s from the same free Yung Joc “street album,” it follows nearly the exact same formula as every Joc song and it also features another excellent (and extra mush-mouthed) verse from Gucci.

Gucci Mane f. OJ da Juiceman, “Wasted” (Remix) MP3

“Wasted” is yet another iteration of the white boy swag movement. Initiated way back in the olden days of 2007 with Shop Boyz’ “Party Like a Rockstar,” the concept in rap songs of white dudes as surfers who often like to get drunk is a popular one—pretty much to the point of oversaturation. But Gucci and OJ rapping about getting wasted and smoking weed over tense strings is enough of an update to make it work.

Zaytoven went for it with this one: employing his super budget keyboards and throwing some real meaty organ under the whole thing in a crazy clash of Southern rap styles that might go overlooked because of the song’s wildly generic name. Of course, because it is 2009 and because it is Zaytoven, our dudes OJ and Gucci sound real at home on this. Maybe it’s how open the beat is, allowing Gucci a chance to really stretch his flow out even as OJ does his usual high register hyperactive bounce.

Is there a way to NOT sound good over a Zaytoven beat? Not like Twista has ever met a beat he couldn’t outrun, but a Zaytoven track with Oj and Gucci is kind of like being in a foot race with a rocket-propelled skateboard. Also, all present are in tip top shape, with Gucci and Twista highlights including, but not limited to, “Kick ass like Bruce Lee cause I got diamonds like Wah-tahhhh,” (Twista), “My watch is conceited so I call it a Kanye,” (Twista) and “You’re not my type of hype, girl you look like a monster,” (Gucci).

Everyone on this song has made individual songs that we’ve jammed, all probably in the last week alone, or maybe we’re just overlooking our undying allegiance to DJ Enuff’s “Rush Hour,” but holy shit, Loso is on fire right now.

When The FADER’s Felipe Delerme took OJ da Juiceman for a dinner interview at Jacques in NYC, we discovered he likes fruityswag, Air Force 1s and risotto (at least it looks like risotto). If we had known OJ and Kellz were secret comic nerds we would have gotten Flip to ask OJ for his thoughts on anime or the death of Superman or something, which he then would have rightly ignored. Not quite sure what Kellz’ interpretation of “Spiderman kush” is—a radioactive hybrid strain, perhaps—but we’ll take it. Meanwhile OJ’s utter glee is like he is actually flying. Can we get an accompanying dance one time?

LA: The Monocle Shop Descends Upon Brentwood, Home of OJ (not da Juiceman)

We can fully appreciate Monocle magazine mastermind Tyler Brûlé’s notion that print should fight decline by adding richness—especially when part of that richness involves tailoring the capitalist anatomy to a hopeless economy. Last night Monocle had an opening party for their new LA pop-up store, showcasing a full array of goods, from back issues to luxury candles (only the essentials). We’re curious to find out when Brûlé will be bringing an edition of The Monocle Shop to New York, where people (in this office… coordinating photos… named John) actually obsess over Monocle’s thick and luxurious pages.

Alright we’ve listened to this song approximately 30 times today, and initially we were skeptical of the unexceptional beat and Rich Boy cohorts Al-Myte and the Supa Villain, but guess what, we listened to this song 30 TIMES! We can’t explain it either, but after that many listens even really bad shit sounds good. Luckily this song has our favorite rising star OJ da Juiceman, Al-Myte and Supa Villain actually sound a little bit like 8 Ball and… a smaller 8 Ball, and Rich Boy continues to develop one of the most impressive voices in rap.

Freeload: OJ Da Juiceman, “Washing Powder Money”

Is “Washing Power Money” to Zone 6 what “Blood Money Pt. III” was to Queensbridge? Can anyone even answer that question? Probably not, but both make us feel a lot less a guilty about how we made rent this month.
OJ Da Juiceman’s
Otha Side of the Trap drops next Tuesday, January 27th. Considering all the free music he’s given away, we’ll be some of the first in line to peel from from our dope boy knot and give something back to the trap.

FADER TV: Breaking Bread with OJ Da Juiceman

For our money, no one talks trapping like OJ Da Juiceman. Maybe it’s because NYC doesn’t have actual traps (unless you count the Whole Foods on Bowery) or maybe it’s that having permanent gold fronts since the age of 16 puts you in a whole different category of lifestyle commitment. Whatever the case, we were delighted to share a meal with young Juice Man on this, his latest (yet only his fourth) trip to New York, to talk about Gucci Mane, his impending debut, and his stupidfruitycrazyswag. Aye! (Special thanks to Jaques for hosting)
