Nike Sportswear x The FADER’s Pitch Perfect Mixtape #6: Africa by Spoek Mathambo

As part one of Nike Sportswear and The FADER’s Pitch Perfect program, we have posted six mixtapes featuring music from six continents (sorry, Antarctica). Each mixtape includes brand new artwork by Siggi Eggertsson, eventually available as limited edition screen-printed posters. And now for the final mixtape from Africa, co-sponsored by our longtime partner (RED)—the innovative program meant to help eliminate AIDS on that continent. Check out North America, Asia, Australia, Europe and South America at Pitch Perfect.

As the inspiration for the entire Pitch Perfect series, Africa is a continent that cannot be conveyed in simple descriptions of geography or statistics, its significance to the next millennium impossible to define in few words, and the efforts of its citizens hardly something that can be communicated through a handful of songs. But, as 2010 is a pivotal moment in Africa’s history on many levels, not the least of which is music, this is our attempt to jumpstart the conversation. From the tip of Tunisia to the cape dividing the Indian and Atlantic, Africans are defining the sound of tomorrow. One in particular, Johannesburg’s Spoek Mathambo, is approaching the future from multiple angles, combining kwaito, electro, hip hop and his own unique vision into new music that is truly global, yet unquestionably local. For his mix, Mathambo focused on his home country’s newest and best (including some of his own new jams), but ventured north for some extra continental craziness.

Nike Sportswear x The FADER’s Pitch Perfect Mixtape #5: North America by Chief Boima

As part one of Nike Sportswear and The FADER’s Pitch Perfect program, we will be posting six mixtapes featuring music from six continents (sorry, Antarctica). Each mixtape will include brand new artwork by Siggi Eggertsson, eventually available as limited edition screen-printed posters. Stay tuned for the final mixtape from Africa this Friday, and check out Asia, Australia, Europe and South America at Pitch Perfect.

Few continents are as fluid as North America. From the Panama Canal to the Bering Strait, its borders contain a representation of nearly every imaginable personal history, and its residents seem to share their cultures as freely as the jet stream. The music that comes out of this panoply blurs the lines even more, and few grasp this constant flow as well as California’s Chief Boima. As a DJ, producer and writer living in San Francisco, Boima champions the genre-defiant and sonically adventurous with a keen eye, limitless curiosity and sly wit. For this mixtape, even though a majority of the artists live or have lived in the US of A, he’s somehow able to represent as many countries as there are songs, each one bounding back and forth across countries as effortlessly as its creator.

Every continent can lay claim to its own unique and extraordinary features, but Asia owns two of the most impressive. It covers almost one-third of the Earth’s land surface and holds almost two-thirds of its human residents. So, when asked to represent this continent in the span of six songs, Tokyo, Japan’s DexPistols were rightly bemused. The duo of DJ Maar and DJ Daruma are known for ushering the modern wave of global club music in to their home city while playing alongside Daft Punk, the Ed Banger crew, Simian Mobile Disco, Crookers and Diplo throughout Asia. All this while heading up a successful streetwear brand and art collective. In the end, they took giant leaps to cover as much ground and represent as many people as possible, but their greatest feat was making it all sound totally crazy.

In the popular imagination, Australia is a rough and vast outback of brash, barbie-shrimping party animals with a penchant for big knives, big game and bigger surf. But in reality, it is—well, it is that. But it is also a place of big-hearted creativity, cutting edge technology, spectacular natural and man-made beauty, and the friendliest people you can imagine. Nowhere is that more evident than in this mix from Australia’s Canyons—a spacious and seamless journey through the outback of your mind. The DJ/production duo out of Perth have released singles and remixes on DFA, Modular and their very own Hole in the Sky Records, and create music across a startling breadth of styles, all represented here. Though the mixtape doesn’t include the sounds of the many beautiful islands that are loosely joined with Australia in the Oceania region, it does inspire a wild-eyed wanderlust to see what’s out there.

There are 47 countries in Europe—almost as many individual nations as there are states in the United States. It’s an imaginary umbrella covering a disparate continent. What’s the same about Galicia and Amsterdam? Prague and Oslo? Europe has mountain ranges and crazy beaches, consistent sun and perpetual fog. And while it may have a long entangled history, a plethora of exports, specialties and pastimes, what it is now known for is a ravenous appetite for dance music. Every corner of Europe has its own breed of bass, its specific sliver of drum love—there is hardly a nook without its own signature beat. For our Pitch Perfect Europe mixtape, British selector and producer Sinden takes a survey of what’s newest and greatest, with a slant on Europe’s beloved house music. It may only represent a fraction of the continent’s offerings, but wherever you live, we promise it sounds extra fresh.

South America is a land of beautiful extremes. It’s home to the highest waterfall, largest river, longest mountain range, driest desert and biggest rainforest on planet Earth. It is also home to some of the world’s fastest feet and broadest smiles, no doubt inspired by the music emanating from seemingly every square inch of its geography. As a member of DJ/production collective Dutty Artz, Maga Bo has taken it upon himself to see as much of this continent as possible, starting with his homebase of Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. His travels have taken him not only around South America but every continent in the world, usually returning with a hard drive full of new collaborations and productions. His Pitch Perfect South America mixtape barely scratches the surface of all that this continent has to offer, but its an impressive start with jams from Guyana to Argentina, Brazil to Colombia. Take a listen and see how long you can sit still.
