Interview: Danny Wang at PS1

Daniel Wang is animated. In the figurative sense, but he could be in the literal, too, floppy hair, head bop and bubbly demeanor. He would fit in perfect on Sesame Street, big eyes when he tells excited muppets about the wavy path of disco. It’s a path well traveled, very notably with his classic, “Like Some Dream” and with his sing and dance along DJ sets. Just before he stood atop speakers at this summer’s PS1 outdoor disco event for happy folks in linen yearning for happiness, Wang sat with us and talked about the current state of music and what it’s like to DJ in the city where much of the music he loves originated. Wang just now has a collection of his singles released, a fairly enormous history of your favorite DJs favorite DJ. Dude is a living legend.

Kenneth Anger Opening at PS1

It’s easy to spend a winter Sunday lazily lounging about watching movies and PS1 seems to have had that in mind with their new Kenneth Anger retrospective which opened fittingly last Sunday. New Yorkers treasure their weekend days for a bit of respite and they could find it at this show. There’s nothing lazy, or even particularly relaxing, about the films—Anger’s work is always at least a little abrasive—but the space itself was a warm, dark cavern, every square foot upholstered with blood red fabric and only a few low-hanging bulbs to provide dim light. As movies played on massive projection screens scattered throughout the room, people sat and laid about to watch, an unusual scenario for those accustomed to walking around museums instead of lounging in them. But it worked, because it did what too many video installations fail to do: it allowed people to comfortably watch the films from beginning to end. And people did. As each movie started up successively, people migrated from one screen to the next. By the time Anger’s “Scorpio Rising” began, a film about James Dean-esque bikers with black motorcycle jackets, cuffed blue jeans, and late ’50s attitude, set to girl group shoo wopping, it felt more like a modern, artful version of a drive-in theater than a typical museum opening. We took some snaps of the films, check them after the jump.

Live: Antony & The Johnsons in Heaven (Actually in a Pretty Room In Tribeca)

Because heaven probably smells lovely like string beans and drying flowers, right? Antony Hegarty had a WPS1-hosted release party for his new EP Another World in a purple-hued room with a gang of wooly robe-wearing women (including issue 54 Gen F, Sahra Motalebi) harmonizing wordlessly in the corners. Antony, dressed in a silken cream-colored gown, corralled everyone into one corner for an a capella version of “Another World,” warbled through with great grace. Then the chorus marched out the room and upstairs where they performed atop a spiral staircase. Antony’s voice and body were like the sea in light breeze. On the way out, you could see the office they transformed into his dressing room where the door was ajar, and there were so many little candles.

NYC: PS1 Warm Up Schedule Announced

How many times do we have to refresh until this shows up? Magically, with no fanfare, it finally has. Every summer, PS1 has weekly Warm Up parties with bands and DJs in their massive courtyard with dry ice and sculptures and a lot of people wearing linen. No better reason to go to Queens than this. We’re excited for DFA day, Metro Area + Kelly Polar, Matthew Dear BUT THAT’S JUST US (and you if you have good taste).
