How old is DJ Quik? In the F48 cover story
he talks about being disturbed at how much a stint in jail aged him, but from our lens he’s looked about 26 years old for the past 26 or so years. You don’t have to be Quik’s age, or even 26 for that matter to appreciate how he can flip something as untouchable as “Anniversary” and still manage to retain that Sons Of Soul warmth. It’s also good to see that when Kurupt scrunches his face up like he wants to set it off on some young ladies who walk through his picnic, he really means he wants them to join his picnic.

Quik and Kurupt’s BlaQKout came through our mailboxes recently and is exactly the sort of late-career move we like to see from these guys (side note: we’d also like to see some kind of web presence from Kurupt). A stuttering female chorus, drums that sound like they were programmed on garbage can lids and Kurupt’s never-changing gravel voice. The only thing we could ask for is a little more rapping from Quik, who only gets on the mic for a couple seconds to talk about radioactive gorillas. Wait, that’s actually incredible. Look for BlaQKout in stores June 9th.
