Backstage at Cassette Playa Spring 2010

The press release for Cassette Playa’s spring 2010 show read “dune gone dubstep,” which made perfect sense when the lights went up on her collection yesterday afternoon at Santos. After a brief flirtation with Celtic symbolism and heavy metal last season, Carrie Munden went back to her ravey roots, and looked to the Middle East for graphic inspiration. We snuck backstage for a closer look at those awesome prints—Munden meshed black and white Arabic script with photo collage, and even layered on her own gold signage (something like a Prince symbol) on the statement pieces for good measure. Weirdly, most of the models were stomping around in snow boots, a fitting topsy-turvy styling counterpoint to the desert-inspired headgear and yarmulke baseball caps. The overall effect was Tank Girl meets Mad Max in a gigantic rave-o-drome in the middle of the Sahara.

New Year’s Eve At Santos Party House

The first thing that struck us about New Year’s Eve 2008 was how happy we were that the year was ending. It seemed many in the crowd at Santos Party House that night were feeling the same way because, after Andrew WK’s 96 second countdown plus performance and the inexplicable DJ set from The Misshapes, everyone looked less generally celebratory than relieved. On what was probably the coldest, anti-ragingest day of 2008, Gang Gang Dance (F44) once again reminded us why we praise their live show so frequently by replacing their experimental space jams of old with the new sprawling drum-heavy burners on Saint Dymphna. After that, we hopped between floors juggling champagne glasses to catch, among others, James Friedman, Lemonade, Invisible Conga People, Mike Simonetti and our dudes Josh Wildman and Andrew Kuo, who started DJing at 4am and kept going ’til sunrise. Or at least we assume so. We headed home before that, exhausted and totally ready for 2009. Up above, check out our video tour of Santos and then imagine it filled with people and champagne and you’ll know what our night was like. Three of the four owners—Andrew WK, Spencer Sweeney and club architect Ron Castellano—were gracious enough to share their secrets on video in a behind (and in front of) the scenes annotated tour of the club’s guts and facades. Also, they dance.
