Slideshow: Henrik Vibskov
- story Chioma Nnadi
For his FADER feature story Henrik Vibskov, gave us full access to his loopy and amazing kingdom. Photographer Guy Martin captured The Solar Donkey Experiment, his spring 2010 runway show in Paris, while Thomas Lekfeldt trailed the Danish designer at the Roskilde music festival in Denmark. Vibskov was the creative director of the dragon formation for Trentemøller’s performance, and you can spot him in his uniform—harem shorts, camo jacket, striped socks and beat-up lil hat—shifting in-between the dancers, on his way to the drum kit.
Slideshow: Not Another Mirror Shot
- story Hanly Banks
Over the last ten years, The FADER has published thousands of photographs by hundreds of photographers from all over the world. Hopefully, when flipping through the pages of each issue, you are able to pick out little details in these photographs that illustrate the subject’s character or illuminate a situation’s subtleties, and that this attention to detail creates an indelible image in your mind of that person or place. To be honest, we look at these things so many times in the course of editing that we start to only notice patterns. Like a dog staring at a herd of kittens, we are made catatonic by the wonder of it all. One of the recurring patterns over the last few years has been the frequent appearance of mirrors, a device that allows for interesting effects and unexpected outcomes, the illusion of light and space where there is little and metaphor for the public and private lives of artists. It could also just be that there are a bunch of mirrors in this world and people like looking in them. Whatever it is, our keenest eye, that of creative director Phil Bicker, always selects only the ones that make sense and saves the rest for his upcoming book project, Look At Me! Em A Kool!,* to be published by FADER Books on the first of Nevruary, 2010billion. Enjoy this slideshow of Phil’s favorite mirror shots during his tenure here, beginning with a portrait of Andrew WK by Michael Schmelling from issue #33.

Slideshow: Sandy Kim’s Photos of Girls
- story Matthew Schnipper
Sandy Kim is pretty short, has a ton of hair, a broken orange backpack and always loses her camera. When that happens, she just gets a disposable and keeps taking pictures. It’s this lackadaisical tenacity we’ve admired so much about her and her photography, how they always looked kind of busted but warmly worn in and comfortable. Like many young photographers, she’s made her friends her subjects—landscapes of young women, tattoos and San Francisco fog—and within that fold of friends are her best friends and FADER’s current cover stars Girls. Over the time we’ve known Sandy, our experience of Girls has grown exponentially, following her photos of them on her blog, from house shows, late nights and terrible magazine photo shoots, she’s accompanied them constantly, allowing us to be eternally voyeuristic with one of our most beloved bands. We asked her to narrate a slideshow of her favorite photos of the band, because our experience of Girls has been so much mediated by hers.
Slideshow: Bonnaroo 2009 by Cheryl Dunn
- story THE FADER
Every year, reputable New York photographer and filmmaker Cheryl Dunn goes to Bonnaroo to document the low-grade mayhem, high-grade elicit substance use and some of the biggest musicians in the world playing for tens of thousands of their muddiest, smelliest fans in the middle of nowhere Tennessee. This year she sent us a bunch of her favorite photos from the three days she was there and we set it to the sounds of one of our favorite recent Animal Collective live staples. While you watch the slideshow, go to Largehearted Boy for an extensive and sort of mindblowing collection of recordings from the festival.
Slideshow: Summer in the City – Part One
- story THE FADER
The Summer in the City series is our photographic edit of the best out-and-about New York style of the season. The first slideshow features dapper attendees of the Femi Kuti show at the Fillmore on Thursday, June 4th.
Slideshow: David Byrne Takes Us on a Guided Tour of His Insane Office, Part III
- story THE FADER
In our current issue, along with all of its other David Byrne-related wonder, you can see regular FADER contributor Jason Nocito’s intimate photos of Byrne in his massive office at the Todo Mundo headquarters. Because of the natural constraints of paper magazines, we were neither able to fit every photo in the issue nor have Byrne explain what you were looking at. Fortunately, we have the internet, and Byrne was generous enough to record this guided audio tour of all the peculiar objects and ephemera photographed by Nocito that otherwise would’ve never been seen. We had so much material, and Byrne had so much to say, we’ve decided to split it into three parts, the last of which focuses on the many personal works of art that adorn the space. See and hear above. And as a bonus, head over to NPR to listen to Byrne and many others perform at the recent Dark Was The Night concert at Radio City Music Hall.

Slideshow: Todo El Mundo
- story THE FADER
With his book The Cycling Diaries out this fall, the fashion spreads in our current icon issue pay homage to David Byrne’s transportation habits. We talked about the insane logistics of this story a couple of weeks ago—an 80-days-around-the-world affair that involved shipping clothes to all four corners of the planet. This slideshow features the best outtakes of the story and is a rare opportunity to follow six very stylish cyclists beyond the pages of the magazine–past city centre canals in Rome, fields in Bangladesh and deserts in Egypt. And to round out the Byrne-centricity, we’ve featured the colorful music of Byrne’s old label, Luaka Bop, all available for purchase on iTunes.
Coachella 2009 Slideshow
- story THE FADER
Is the desert too hot for you? We understand, that shit is gnarly. Lucky for you, we’ve put together a slideshow collecting highlights from the three sweltering days of Coachella 2009 so you can view from your air-conditioned computer room. Among others, we’ve got some great photos of Lykke Li, Devendra Banhart and an unavoidable closeup of Kyp Malone, all courtesy of FADER fam Paul Familetti.
