Stream: Douster f. Spoek Mathambo, “Punani”

When we spoke to French producer Douster in FADER #63, he told us he was influenced by dinosaurs and medieval times like in Braveheart, and that he had to imagine a movie-like tale when he made music. We’re thinking this “Punani” track was set sometime in ancient Egypt, and we can totally see charismatic Sweat.X’s Spoek Mathambo wearing some sort of loincloth and pharaoh helmet instructing his Salome harem to jiggle their booties in the pyramid foyer—he makes the word punani sound kind of hallowed, even. Douster also told us he generally takes the reggaeton drum pattern and freaks it out, which you can hear in this track’s otherworldliness.

Video: Douster, “King of Africa”
- story Peter Macia
In our latest issue, available for free right here, we feature French by way of Buenos Aires producer Douster, whose eclectically composited club jams have been all up in our iTunes since early this year and who has a healthy obsession with both Lost and dinosaurs (who doesn’t). And apparently that obsessive behavior has spread to YouTube, as his latest video for the brand new “King of Africa” edits together documentary footage of people dancing, little kids doing the Harlem Shake, George Bush, The Lion King and some chubby pre-teens to good comedy effect. Douster also put the track up on Soundcloud, and while we were there, we grabbed a couple other recent favorites, the first heavy metal xylophone remix we can recall hearing, and twitchy redo of all-time fave Busy Signal. If you’re dying to get the jump on this kind of stuff, we recommend following Douster’s Twitter. And ours. Why not!

Schlachthofbronx f. Big Space & Spoek Mathambo, “Holdin That Dick” MP3
- story Sam Hockley-Smith
How awesome is it that in 2009 it’s totally viable to email an editor explaining your contribution to a song as “bass and airhorn.” Just like when the Mighty Mighty Bosstones had that guy on stage that danced around and never touched an instrument. Granted, Schlachthofbronx is understating his contribution, which also includes that sound from Duck Hunt when you kill a duck and it torpedoes out of the sky, and hyperactive percussion that acts as the perfect foil for frequent collaborators Big Space and Spoek Mathambo. Buy the entire album here.

Schlachthofbronx, Belly Full of Pills Mix
For the Bavarian bass party in Schlachthofbronx’s release schedule, these German pranksters compiled a mix of wobbly house excerpts from their forthcoming Belly Full of Pills. The proper EP features Slush Puppy Kids aka South African bros Spoek Mathambo and Big Space, while this preview showcases their overdriven house synths on reggae/reggaeton beat patterns and gets fairly nasty on the vocals to frame the confluence of flashing lights with flailing booty. Also, it’s possible they are inventing new genres: At about 9:15, it gets real Addams Family-y with the organ tweets… should we call it haunted house? Ha!

Spoek Mathambo, H.I.V.I.P: United States of Ayobaness Mix
- story Peter Macia
Someday we’ll hire Spoek of Sweat.X as a full-time bringer of good things into your lives, but until then, it’s all just jacking stuff from his blog, which hopefully at least some of you have now bookmarked as it’s constantly filled with brand new club jams from Africa by guys like the amazing What What, Cleo et al. What’s great about Spoek’s periodic H.I.V.I.P. mixes is that he always mixes these ungoogleable songs with stuff we already love but aren’t used to hearing next to South African house or what have you, like Dam Funk’s remix of Red’s unbelievable one-man anthem “I Should Tell Your Momma On You,” which closes out this edition right out of What What’s intensely bubbly “Dreams.”

Exclusive Stream: Sweat.X, “I’m That Alley”
- story Julianne Escobedo Shepherd

Sweat.X, South Africa’s digitized descendants of Prince (early years), are dropping a new EP on Citinite, whose purveyor Manuel Sepulveda happens to be featured in FADER #63 for his futurefunk sleeve artwork for those guys and others (check the cover for this one after the jump). Like Jem says, synergy! “I’m That Alley,” a slinky electro synth track with a dollop of sexy falsetto from superman Spoek Mathambo, drops August 24 and foretells copius dancefloor slow-grinds—not quite “Erotic City” flagrant dry-humping but definitely on point for “Controversy”-style understated freakage. The B-Side, “The Knife,” is a twitchy, nasty, twerky rap track with Spoek dropping some of his infamously swaggy self-invented slang, which is to say you’d do well to cop that in anticipation of their next full-length, 187.

Mr. V, “Put Your Drink Down (Big Space RMX)” MP3
Mr. V made this song “Put Your Drink Down” on Louie Vega’s label in 2006, which YouTube identifies as a “smash hit,” though we were apparently neither smashing nor hitting when it was doing those things (no sexual). But Johannesberg’s Big Space, real life bro of Spoek Mathambo and blogging/slang-slanging tour de force, decided to remix it in 2009 and leak it to promote what he calls “Operation Sweating Bullets.” True to his moniker, this is a wee nug of anti-gravitational house, however why in god’s name would anyone want to put their drink down? You can dance and hold things at the same time, people, it is totally possible and can on occasion look kind of cute.

Spoek Mathambo, whose group Sweat.X we covered in last year’s special Africa issue, is becoming a reliable source for African club or African club-inspired music connections of all kinds from all corners on his H.I.V.I.P. mixes, regularly hooking us up with new and rare jams from Mujava, Sibot, friend of The FADER Chief Boima and a ton more. On this one though he’s also giving us a sneak listen to his new recording aliases Moleke Mbembe and Slush Puppy Kids on some remixes and a couple originals, which are, how shall we say this, fucking awesome.
