Telfar’s UN.DER T Diffusion Line

New York-based designer Telfar sums up his design aesthetic as “simplex” (complex + simple) and judging by the his new label, UN.DER T, this riddling oxymoron makes for a nice fit. The diffusion line reads like a greatest hits of Telfar classics—hooded crop tops, drop crotch pants, the simplex sweatshirt and other unisex seprates dipped in a little Dark Knight allure. Pop by Eva on Bowery tomorrow when the full collection goes on sale.

Style TV: Telfar F/W 09

Thanks to the support of fashion-loving New Yorkers, Telfar was able to showcase his singular brand of fashion directionalism once again during New York fashion week this month. The resulting fall ‘09 collection was stylishly recession-proof, with two (or sometimes four!) outfits wrapped into one look. The genius, of course, was in all the amazing zippage — onesies that transform into form-fitting separates with the nifty flick of a zip! Think of each Telfar creation as a one-step uniform, and keep a keen one of that amazing jewelry. Those necklaces and earrings floating magically behind each ear were specially commissioned for the show.

Style: Benefit for TELFAR

No doubt times are rough for the fashion industry with New York’s upcoming fashion week schedule starting to resemble an interpretive Excel spreadsheet of Swiss cheese. We try to keep our chins up by frequenting the sample sale circuit and delving deep into our fashion world studies, but when we see the smaller labels struggle, that feeling of hopelessness starts to creep in. One of our favorite avant-garde New York designers, TELFAR, has hit one of those rocky fashion week hiccups and will be hosting a benefit for the F/W 09 collection this Friday the 6th of February. Enticing us with $3 well drinks, DJ sets by the designer, DJ Kingdom and a special surprise performance after midnight could be just the remedy for our trampled spirits. The benefit starts at 9pm and goes until triple question mark (???) and will be hosted at Carol’s Loft at 154 E. 2nd Street in the Lower East Side. While we’re not really sure who Carol is (we suspect she’s the fairy god mother of fashion week) we’re pretty sure that TELFAR will show you a good time in exchange for a little indie fashion love.

Stylee Fridays: Telfar Spring 08

For every item of clothing that designer Telfar has ever created, there are at least a dozen ways of wearing each piece. A light military coat doubles up as a spring time jumpsuit, a cropped jacket turns into a backpack, and a sheer shirt becomes hoodie-ready in an instant. It’s all part of the fun/games (and genius) of Telfar’s clothing, and why I decided to pop down to his SoHo showroom this week and have the designer himself walk me through the “post-apocalyptic tribal” collection that is Telfar Spring 2008. Telfar spent the first five years of his life in Liberia, and the collection takes a pinch of African inspiration—safari hues, heavy natural fabrics like burlap and climate-friendly accessories like sandals for boys or “mandals” as he calls them. The idea, he explained, is to imagine you’ve woken up after the apocalypse and rummaged through your wardrobe for some suitable end-of-times gear. One piece that might be useful pre/post apocalypse: the Telfar “flask necklace” designed for long waterless walks through the desert (or alternatively on bar/pub crawl). Telfar is off to London Fashion Week in the spring, and was pretty tight-lipped about the new new collection. Suffice to say it’s all about the exo-skeleton for Fall 08, and there will be lots of leather!
