Video: The Jesus Lizard Brightens Up Pitchfork Music Festival
- story Rosemary Simon
We made it to Union Park in Chicago this past weekend just in time to catch a sideshow of indie rock babies, an unwelcome whiff of global warming, and of course, the 4th annual Pitchfork Music Festival. We spent most of the cloudy, spring-like weekend watching known FADER favorites The Very Best, Beirut, Grizzly Bear, Wavves, Lindstrom, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart etc, but the real highlight of the entire thing was The Jesus Lizard.
We’re not usually big on reunion shows or scrotal showcases, but David Yow brought back his intense, zig-zaggy stage swagger minus the “Tight and Shiny”— doing push-ups on stage, giving the audience hula lessons, spitting everywhere and diving into the audience within the first three seconds of the show—with grand mastery. We caught a little bit of it on our Flipcam—watch closely for some ancient hula styles and Yow’s tiniest fan taking stage diving notes from the sidelines.

Watching this video we get the impression that, had the music business gone in an entirely different direction, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart could have been teen sensations. Watch as they put on makeup! Hang out at the beach! Have a slumber party! Use a Sidekick! Normal kids do all this stuff too, but it is way more fun if you are in a famous band while you’re doing it. In reality, the band is merely going on a mini tour that starts February 7th in New York at The Mercury Lounge, but we will bring our autograph books anyway.

Go and read Nitsuh Abebe’s epic-for-the-internet history of indie pop aka “twee” from 2005. Then, come back here and tell us if you saw anything in there about New York City — even the slightest mention of one of those bands getting stuck at JFK on their way to Boston or Olympia. Nothing? How does Evergreen State College get recognized as the epicenter of American indie pop and New York gets nothing? Maybe we were what they didn’t want to be back then, but we wear the shit out of some cardigans now. And we have ourselves some pretty great indie pop in the name of Cause Co-Motion! on What’s Your Rupture? and these new guys The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart on OG indie label Slumberland Records (see also: Crystal Stilts). Slumberland put out The Pains “A Teenager In Love” earlier this year and are set to release their next single “Everything With You” this October. You can download the former below and listen to the latter at their MySpace, both of which, as our intern Maud puts it, “sound like riding your bicycle to your friends house after you’ve finished your homework.” Zing! Or not? Is that an insult or just an accurate description? Being kind of nerdy has become so nebulous lately. Anyway, we have slept on The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart solely on principle thus far and are changing our ways. See them live on August 29th at Glasslands. And bring your curated pimples!
