We Make it Good Mix Series v. 10: Morgan Geist
- story Sam Hockley-Smith
For the latest version of the WMIG x FADER Presents We Make it Good Mix Series, Morgan Geist of Metro Area/Environ/Unclassics and New Jersey fame goes far out into the cosmos and comes back with an astoundingly tight selection of rare and seminal disco, but we’ll let him explain the inspiration himself:
This little mix is obviously inspired by the original Cosmic DJs (Baldelli,
Loda) and innovative DJs of (or nearer to) my own generation, like DJ Harvey
and Daniel Wang. I made sure to include some records that I thought
I “discovered” on my own, only to hear them played by other (better) DJs who
probably knew about them a lot longer than I did. Parallel evolution is a
bitch, but I didn’t want to abandon these beloved tracks just because they
were “marked” by another DJ. For example, most DJs who know the Transfer
Station Blue track associate it with Sarcastic Disco, the infamous and
beautiful Harvey mix – yet I believe I got my first copy of it from my
departed friend, Barry Lederer, and associate it with digging and listening
and learning in his dusty old apartment on 24th Street in Manhattan. I find
Harvey inspirational, but don’t want my own Barry-nostalgia supplanted. I
realize it sounds corny, but sometimes you have to reclaim music that is
important to you, and that’s what a lot of this mix is about for me.

Paul Devro has been responsible for a bunch of awesome parties, put up endless goodness on the Mad Decent blog, put us on to crazy music from India…we could go on. Instead, we’re going to direct your attention to his mix for We Make it Good, presented in conjunction with FADER, and out now to soundtrack your summer. We have about 300 favorite moments on this 40 solid minutes (the transition from John Holt’s “Strange Things” to Plies’ “All Black” being way up there), but we’ll let you pick your own.

Style: Pleet TV
- story THE FADER
From what we can tell from the fashion internets, regular 2D lookbooks are officially for dweebs. First came performance artist Kalup Linzy’s dragtastic performance of “Sampled and Left Ova,” an Oscar-worthy interpretation of Proenza Schouler’s resort collection and now Samantha Pleet launches Pleet TV with We Make It Good TV (who recently put a video out from the FADER Fort in Texas) for her holiday 2009 line. The show is what you would expect from the Pleet universe: champagne, a mean laugh track and lots of kooky romper-clad ladies climbing out of treasure chests doing impromptu Cher impressions. Matter of fact, if Wayne’s World had a 2009 remake, we’re pretty sure Tia Carrere could rock a Sam Pleet romper with just the right amount of divatude.

- story THE FADER
Remember that really cool dude in high school who put together awesome mixtapes that would turn you on to the craziest shit ever? No? Okay you might have been that guy then. Either way, chances are Brooklyn skronky dance outfit Free Blood, who we profiled in FADER #54, are dropping some unknown gems into their installment of the WMIG mixtape series. We’re fully weirded out by Herman’s Rocket’s “Disco Woman,” which pretty much amounts to an alien invasion or our ear canals via theremin, as well as the bass pop of Wight Light Orchestra’s completely out there “Chaos & Consciousness”. All that is mixed in with jams from NY standbys Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Little Walter, The Dirtbombs and a closing track from the always welcome Cameo. There’s a bunch more packed in there as well and all of it is awesome. So when you’re done listening, feel free to head over to We Make It Good and peruse previous mixes from Crookers, XXXChange, Blaqstarr and more.

Last Friday on The Let Out (our weekly show on East Village Radio, made possible by Dewars), DJ Pretty Titty aka Clayton Vomero of We Make It Good fame played a bunch of jams (check both Beyond the Wizard’s Sleeve remixes). Not to be outdone, we came through with a selection of new music that’s been rattling around in our ear canals, and through our combined efforts we created a completely 100% solid two hour block of music. Listen live to East Village Radio this and every following Friday from 6-8pm EST, stream last week’s audio podcast below and check out the tracklist after the jump.

- story THE FADER
Some people believe in aliens, we at the FADER believe in an endless proliferation of amazing music that sprouts forth from a secret delicate wellspring in various woods across the globe. We are pretty sure we know which of us is right. Case in point: Chapter 7 in the ongoing mix series from We Make it Good, this time, for the first time, co-presented by us! It’s an irrefutable mix of outré spazzing dance music and the occasional funky break tempered by the hot buzz of sax-synths. We would expect nothing less from Crookers’ Bot and Phra, our absolute favorite Milano party jammers. Download and get the tracklist at the link below, check the previous six mixes at We Make It Good and stay peeping for Volume 8 coming soon enough.
