The ABSOLUT FADER Visionary Podcast #4 — Leads To

Turning the halfway corner in the Visionary Podcast series, curated by The FADER and presented by ABSOLUT as part of our ongoing efforts to advance and advocate the art and music we love, we come to the phrase, “Leads to.” These two open-ended words instantly made us think of some kind of narrative, so we tried to tell a little story through the song titles—a story that of course ends with us soaking up some sun.

After going fairly hard on #3, we mellowed this one out a little bit, traversing its length with the coastal vibes of Foreign Born, the slightly nautical Friend, a fluid jam from White Denim, Purple Wowness via a Joker and Ginz remix and the wobbly pop of our man Theophilus London. Check the tracklist after the jump, and come back soon for “Something” on podcast #5.

White Denim, “Wet Sand” MP3

Not to blow up any spots, but the little dude in White Denim definitely used to post on this one messageboard a lot and his name there was “teebro.” There’s no real one-to-one translation between that and being in a Texan rock band with a new album, Fits, due in October, but “teebro” sounds like the name of a Dana Carvey character and White Denim sounds like the Wayne’s World-appropriate band you and some dudes make after you meet in AA and totally have it together but there’s really nothing going on on Saturday that isn’t going to bars, so you might as well get together and jam with the virgin bloody marys your extremely sweet girlfriends cooked up for the occasion of you staying out of trouble. The best lyrics in “White Sand”—a holdover track from 2007 that really unfortunately has gone unheard, because it is sweet—are Whoa whoa whoa whoaaa and its best drums are hand claps.

If anyone can explain why exactly White Denim is not releasing its reediculous new album Fits in their homeland of the United States, please send us an email at info@thefader.com because we cannot for the life of us figure it out. If you live in the UK or are happy with mp3s, you can get the album now (or album + T-shirt bundle) from Full Time Hobby. Above is the bizarre new video for the fifth song on the album in which sweet Steve Terebecki runs a lot and then does something bad with something given to him by an albino angel.

Freeload: Stag & Dagger Festival MP3 Bonanza

In our newest issue—available on paper or magic PDF paper—we chose Micachu & The Shapes to represent cover icon David Byrne’s tendency to be in the thick of things yet totally out of it. Cool, yet not cool. Micachu is right in the middle of the UK pop scene but is nowhere near anyone else, as you can hear on this cover of Toddla T’s “Backchatter” with Miss Bienek. Micachu will be playing Vice’s gigantic UK festival Stag & Dagger this Thursday at the London venue, and subsequent days will host every other band we’ve liked over the last year or so. So, go buckwild on free songs from a few of our favorites from the lineup and pick up Stag & Dagger tickets here.

Is it possible that White Denim’s recent appearance on FADER TV, in which they jammed the shit out of some fishes and almost got us evicted, inspired the music on their new album Fits? Going by the gurgling submarine sounds of this new song, we’ll just take credit and brag about it around town, which no one will care about since White Denim still has no US label even though they are one of the tightest bands in this country. So, our plan is to fly over to the UK on June 22nd, buy the album, maybe score some free shrooms and come home, resulting in a total retail price of 3700 dollars. There’s probably a metaphor for the American economy in there somewhere, but whatever IT’S SUNNY OUTSIDE YAYYYY.

FADER TV: 20,000 Leagues Under Our Conference Room with White Denim

Ever since they played our CMJ space a couple years ago, a couple of us FADER editors have been secretly, minorly obsessed with the intelligent jam stylings of Austin, Texas’ White Denim. The band’s new album Exposion is available for purchase now and has just been given a pretty good review on Pitchfork by FADER contributor David Bevan, though we would’ve liked to see a little more enthusiasm over there, Bevo. Exposion is AT LEAST a 7.9.

When the band came through New York City, we decided to test out our other obsession, Green Screen, with them in our conference room. That decision almost got us fired, evicted and strung up by our blogsticles, but it was worth it as we now have a video of White Denim playing “Migration Wind,” off their new album, surrounded by manatees, dolphins and fish of many beautiful varieties. Enjoy it, spread it around and let us know who and where you’d like to see in the next Green Screen adventure on FADER TV.

Okay, White Denim now sound like country western Blue Cheer. Also this song is like two minutes long but dudes don’t bother singing until 1m 35s. It’s like compressed prog. So good. And just cuz, watch the above video of them playing our CMJ space last October. Bass dude is 9-years-old!
