Young Jeezy, “Trap Or Die 2″ (prod by Zaytoven) MP3

While artists’ beefs don’t usually have anything at all to do with producers, it’s still pretty weird seeing Young Jeezy’s name attached to Zaytoven, the man who’s production excess powered the meteoric rise of Jeezy’s old, and somehow current nemesis, Gucci Mane. Zaytoven, though, has long been the go-to producer for both aspiring and established trap stars alike, and more recently, floundering pop icons. So while Gucci is off chasing TRL dragons with Polow Da Don, Jeezy is back in the trap, or at least trapped in the studio with one of the most adept producers to create a sequel to the song that epitomized his platform.

See, it’s shit like this that makes us not care about Andre 3000 ever rapping again [Ed. We definitely still care about Andre 3000 rapping.] And we could talk about how much we wanted this Big Boi album, but it’s pretty apparent our voices are falling on deaf ears. On this track, Gucci in particular is in rare form and not just cause he’s rapping over sped up Teddy P. instead of Zaytoven’s usual twankle and glisten. These are the type of flows that render already dubious “hottest rapper” lists completely irrelevant.

So Many Shrimp nailed it when they said that Young Dro bites Yung LA shamelessly on this song. And why shouldn’t he? Dro is the father of many current rapper’s styles, but LA is Grand Hustle’s style killer, rapping in a helium-voiced uptalk that dominates almost every song he’s on by sheer passive force. He’s not on this one though, so Dro takes a swing at soft sounds over Zaytoven’s ultra-positive bird-chirp synths.

Zaytoven went for it with this one: employing his super budget keyboards and throwing some real meaty organ under the whole thing in a crazy clash of Southern rap styles that might go overlooked because of the song’s wildly generic name. Of course, because it is 2009 and because it is Zaytoven, our dudes OJ and Gucci sound real at home on this. Maybe it’s how open the beat is, allowing Gucci a chance to really stretch his flow out even as OJ does his usual high register hyperactive bounce.

Is there a way to NOT sound good over a Zaytoven beat? Not like Twista has ever met a beat he couldn’t outrun, but a Zaytoven track with Oj and Gucci is kind of like being in a foot race with a rocket-propelled skateboard. Also, all present are in tip top shape, with Gucci and Twista highlights including, but not limited to, “Kick ass like Bruce Lee cause I got diamonds like Wah-tahhhh,” (Twista), “My watch is conceited so I call it a Kanye,” (Twista) and “You’re not my type of hype, girl you look like a monster,” (Gucci).

- story THE FADER
Since his release not two months ago, Gucci Mane has popped up on songs with a number of characters we’re not sure even knew who he was a year ago. But our man DG Yola been down since before the last time Gucci’s MySpace was updated (January ‘08). An early version of this has been around for a little while, but this is Gucci at his most insensitive, with lines like My Jacob watch a short bus, man it’s Special Ed/Cause these girls be drooling every time they see the VVS. Yola is also back on form, which is to say that everyone should sound as happy as he does when they get to rap over Zaytoven beats.

If you count singles alone (like we are now), Gorilla Zoe has had pretty impressive track record dating back to his black-on-black Dickies days as a member of Boyz n da Hood. Now we could have made a post about just how little Zoe has done for the world since “Hood Nigga” and “Bottle Poppin,” but we’d rather rejoice at “What It Is.” And what it is, is pushing a 100mph down Buford Highway on the way to the club. The Lithonia version of Kollossus is along for the ride, but other than Zaytoven, the real hero is the Officer Ricky. He seems have dug himself quite a hole with this little 50 situation, but if he continues spitting like this, we’re not sure he can’t just rap his way out.
