A handful of obvious favorites are available on DVD this week– Marie Antoinette, The Departed, Half Nelson– but don't sleep on the quiet Criterion release of Vittorio De Sica's heartbreaking Bicycle Thieves (above). In short: post-WWII Italy; Dad needs bike for work to feed family; asshole steals bike; Dad and Cutest Kid Ever desperately search the streets for stolen bike, a wrenching finale we won't tell you about, mad dudes crying in your bathroom (tip-off: "Do you have a cat, bro? My allergies are killing me.") It seems like one of those classics of cinema that everybody knows but nobody has seen, but you can pretend you were waiting for the remaster. And if ever a jerk steals your bike, here's a Google map of community bike shops in the US.
