Major Lazer Remix The Prodigy’s “Smack My Bitch Up”

November 19, 2012

XL Recordings will reissue the Prodigy's once-ubiquitous, double-platinum 1997 LP The Fat of The Land next month. Out December 4th in the US and December 3rd in the UK, the deluxe edition re-release will feature mixes by contemporary electronic acts including Baauer, Noisia, Alvin Risk, Zeds Dead and the Glitch Mob. Major Lazer handled the above remix of the album's third single, "Smack My Bitch Up," premiered today on Zane Lowe's BBC Radio 1 show. The song and its NSFW video, below, were criticized for advocating violence against women by the National Organization for Women and the Beastie Boys, who asked Prodigy not to perform the track during their set at 1998's Reading Festival. The band insisted the track's lyrics referred to "doing anything intensely," and didn't oblige the request, with vocalist Maxim Reality barking from the stage, "I do what the fuck I want. You understand?"
