Earlier this year, the video for Oceaán's "Need U" video had my heart skipping a beat and my feet following suit. The Manchester-based producer has a knack for small gestures—tiny percussion flicks, lean drums—that invoke big feelings. Maybe it's because he knows that if he leaves the space, the listener will fill in the rest. That certainly feels the case on his new EP, The Grip, out December 8th on Chess Club Records. It's almost like he's holding his breath at times, waiting for a response he's not sure is coming. He's more forthcoming in person, though. "Within this EP I wanted to explore the boundaries of club culture and the timbres that embody the nature of that world," he told FADER. "In addition, I focused on investigating how lyrics can be married into the soundscape of the EP; more experimentally in 'Grip' itself and more directly within the rest of the EP." Listen to the EP in full below.
