Ela Minus’ “Volcán” Is A Ray Of Synthy Sunshine For Your Winter Troubles

The New York-based Colombian artist shares her first single off forthcoming EP, Grow.

Ela Minus is the solo project of New York-based artist Gabriela Jimeno, former drummer of the dream pop band Balancer. The Colombian musician offers soft, Spanish lyrics over bouncy synths to create “Volcán,” a burst of heat and energy not unlike the title’s subject manner.

In contrast with the saccharine lightness of her 2015 EP First Words, Jimeno grappled with the notion of creating something just as sweet but with a new weight. “During the writing and production process of this new EP I found myself constantly trying to find a balance between a new aggressiveness and anger that I was feeling and the (apparently unavoidable) childish sound of my voice,” Jimeno told The FADER via email. “'Volcán' is the song that represents that quest the most.”

We definitely agree with Jimeno; “Volcán” is a promising track off her forthcoming EP Grow expected March 4, co-produced by Andrés Nusser of Astro and the self-proclaimed “synth-nerd” herself. Stay warm and listen to the track below.
