Byrd Watching
- story THE FADER
Man, it’s been getting harder and harder to hold off on the seemingly inevitable Dipset shark-jumping post. Oh, for the bygone days of 2004. Fuck, even just the bygone days of Killa Season set visits and overblown press conferences! We have to admit, it’s been a bummer watching our enthusiasm for the Purple Ones wane over the past few months with every new lukewarm diss and dire, unexciting compilation album. BUT! The just-leaked JR Writer album (Google around, lawbreakers…uh, we mean, IN STORES TUESDAY!) has some goddamn good moments. Namely track 13, “Zoolander”, built on nothing but a spazzy breakbeat (courtesy Dame Grease), scratches, and JR’s Tourette’s flow – he even gets all Chappelle-as-Dylan with an “I rhyme when I rip/ I rip when I rhyme” section (HOT FIRE!). Also: THE SONG IS CALLED “ZOOLANDER.” Who can say whether or not this moment is fleeting or not, but for the first time in a while, the anything-goes, “Fuck the man, I’m the man!” creativity that made us like these dudes in the first place is back. Don’t fuck it up, Harlem.
