The Funk Flex ’90s-stravaganza from last week’s 4th of July holiday mixmaster session on Hot 97 has been getting a ton of blog love – and rightfully so, the Big Dog Pitbull is one of the best ever (read up on your FADER No 1s!) and his detours into classics make for indellible New York radio moments on a regular basis. A more slept-on revelation from the airwaves this past weekend is this new Fat Joe cut, “Time’s Running Out.” Some online sleuthing reveals that the song technically belongs to Terror Squad affilates Kill All Rats (who have a compilation dropping this fall on Koch) but the Boriqua bomber owns it, especially when dudes are scratching in his siren-scored intro like complete spazzes. Office opinion is split on “Favorite Fat Joe Era;” some folks are fond of the Primo period when dude was still “Fat Joe Da Gangsta” and rapped like the lost third member of Group Home, while others favor the flossed-out, eating-mad-lobster Miami Joey of today. This one splits the difference and sounds not unlike the J.O.S.E. blap, “My Lifestyle.” Recent vintage!
