Video: Manu Chao, “Politik Kills (Long Version)”

June 03, 2008

In the tradition of Manu Chao not really putting himself in his videos (and, thusly, giving voice to the people, as in MI GENTE), this video from La Radiolina shows a really cool kid playing "Politik Kills" from a boombox and walking through Monrovia, Liberia one year after their civil war concluded. "Dignity" and "Respect Victims of War" are painted on street signs. The cool kid is, in fact, a former child soldier. Some buildings are bombed out and some parts of the village look impoverished but, in true form, he focuses more on the aforementioned dignity of the people affected, people who are pumped to be on camera, smiling kids getting used to peace, as well they should—as well as we all deserve. Mega shouts to Manu Chao, activist and musician, who by the way was featured in FADER 48. Read the interview by Eddie "Stats" Houghton here.
