Don’t Call it a Comeback: The Wrestler Trailer and Mickey Rourke’s Terrifying Physical Appearance

November 21, 2008

Darren Aronofsky's latest film The Wrestler has been racking up Oscar chatter for its lead actor Mickey Rourke since it was first screened for critics a while back. And while the just-released trailer does indeed hint at a pretty stunning performance, both physically and technically, by Rourke, we wouldn't necessarily categorize it as a comeback as so many critics have. Barring a lean stretch between 1988 and his pretty awesome supporting role in 1995's The Rainmaker during which he was getting in fights for money, Rourke has had a pretty solid run from 1981 to 2008, especially considering he is rumored to have turned down major roles in The Untouchables, Silence of the Lambs, Rain Man, 48 Hours, Platoon, and Pulp Fiction. Even post-cheek implant, Rourke has been one of those actors who seems to intimidate his co-stars (maybe it was the cheek implants, who knows), so maybe the most surprising thing about what you will see in the trailer is his tenderness, though it's a little hard to tell what's going on behind his mask of creatine bloat. All we're saying is that Robert De Niro sure gets a lot of credit. View The Wrestler trailer now Apple.com and see it in theaters on December 17th.
