Ghetto Palms: Son of Cumbia / Lollibon Video XXXclusive / Soft Pr0n

January 14, 2009

Every week resident FADER selector Eddie STATS runs through dancehall riddims and other artifacts from the ghetto archipelago.

Everybody likes presents. This week—probably because I included Bersa Discos Vol. 1 in my year end Ghetto Palmes d’Or column—DJ ORO 11 sent me a promo pack containing the entire Bersa Discos discog (4 EPs profundo) on 12-inch vinyl, countless stickers with syncretistic icons depicting Virgins of Guadelupe, grim reapers and Gauchito Gil, a ditto machine zine of Bay Area cholo culture called Mi Vida Loca (“by la raza for la raza”) and a Ziploc bag full of unidentified dried leaves which was possibly illegal to send across state lines.

That is the only explanation I have for the following blend of cumbia sonidero jams, which draws heavily, but not exclusively from the dubbier selections on the Bersa Discos EPs, the weirdest of which sound like Creation Rebel scoring an Alejandro Jodorowski documentary on '80s soundsystem culture.

Cumbia 2 blend:

DJ Negro, “Limotronica”

DJ Negro, “Andres Landero vs. The Roockie”

Chancha via Circuito, “Cumbia Murguera”

Zurita, “Informacion Tropical”

El Hijo de la Cumbia, “Bombon Asesino Version”

Just in case you never checked how deeply this nu-cumbia thing has infiltrated the consciousness of the moment, a few weeks ago I got hit up with a refix of “Bombon Asesino” featuring a torch song cover of Weezy F. Baby’s “Lollipop” over the Daleduro beat. It came from Simon Iddol , proprietor of a blog called Audio Porn Central which as far as I can tell is basically dude foxholed up in his Vatican City hideout (I could not make this stuff up) steady blogging mash-outs of MIA pseudo-reggaeton acapellas over Deee-lites “Groove is in the Heart.” For instance: this. In keeping with the incestuousity of the times, Ghetto Palms has apparently become a link in the chain, which Simon described something like this:

I saw Daleduro's “Bombon Asesino” on Ghetto Palms back in July and I got addicted to it after the first listen. In those weeks I was having a massive creative block, and this song inspired me. Few weeks later we posted Madison's Lollipop cover on APC, she found it somehow, we started to email, chat and plan things for the future. Right now I'm working on remixes for her, but my bootlegger way of thinking came first so I started to play around with the acapella and I was amazed how perfectly these two fit. I decided to have a video so I asked the most original mashup video producer I know, my good friend Phil RetroSpector—he came up with the retro sex movie, vampiros lesbos feeling, and a massive red filter.

And that is the only explanation I have for this mildly pornographic world-world premier-premier of “Lollibon” video mash out:
