Live: Sean Paul at Club Element

On the eve of Martin Luther King Jr’s observed birthday we braced ourselves for the already-in-progress mini blizzard and headed to the Lower East Side for some whiskey and dancehall. Strange bedfellows, we’ll admit, but you do what you have to do to see “Watch Dem Roll” live. “Sean Paul and Friends” were set to play at Club Element (hosted by Upscale Crowd promotions) and we anticipated some crazy cameos in addition to jammers spun by Irie Jam Radio’s
DJ Calli B and Young Chow. While we sheepishly attempted to “sweep” and “nuh linga” and swayed to dancehall classics new and old (and some 90’s hip hop thrown in for good measure) the biggest surprise of the night was not that SP invited Fader 55 cover star Estelle on stage at 3:15 to sing their luster’s rock duet, “Come Over,” but to hear Mr. Cee drop the McDonald’s McNugget R&B jingle to intro his set and hearing the crowd’s appeased roar. Or maybe that was our stomachs. Either way, Element also hosts a dancehall party every Friday, offering “reggae-robics and soca-cise.”
