On the Street: Once Upon a Time…Madonna

Between the Ed Hardy sweatpants and the Kabbalah bracelets it’s easy to forget that once upon a time Madonna was, in fact, a wholly awesome creature. Last week at the launch of Yoko Devereaux’s new collection for Urban Outfitters, a certain red-lipped young lady reminded us of those beloved early days of Madonna worship, with a look that fell somewhere between Desperately Seeking Susan and True Blue. If we had to pick a reference picture, we’d choose Amy Arbus’ photo of early Madonna on the cover of her cult street photography book On The Street, sporting the selfsame dark-rooted blonde crop and mannish double-breasted coat.
