Every other Thursday, FADER style contributor Bethany Cosentino crosses boroughs, counties and states to find us fine thrifted and vintage pieces on the cheap for her column, Thrintage. This week in Eagle Rock, Ca she checked out the local Goodwill. Read her thoughts and peep the steals after the jump.
There are about five things on my list of Ways to Cure Boredom. Cleaning my room is the number one thing, usually followed by walking around aimlessly for a few hours amongst other things. One of those other things is visiting the Goodwill down the street from my house. I visit so often that the people who work here know me by name. Let’s be real, it’s not the greatest thrift store in the bunch, but it definitely cures boredom, and at the same time provides me with rad things to lug back on the walk home because honestly I can’t remember a time I’ve ever walked out of this Goodwill empty handed. Just last week I found a baby-sized Malcolm X baseball hat, an unopened copy of Tupac: Resurrection and a box of Garfield Christmas cards!
On this particular trip, I spotted a pair of red and white striped overall shorts that I really couldn’t pass up. I paired them with a simple lightweight blank tank top for maximum comfort. Next I stumbled across an awesome open knit, white mesh top– super baggy and perfect for day trips to the beach. I’ve kind of already declared this the “summer of midriffs” so I was super psyched when I found two great ones in one trip. The first, a white cotton top with pastel hearts scribbled on it, and the second a stretchy black and white striped top that went amazing with some high-waisted denim shorts I found. I picked up a few really cute dresses too, a vintage burnt orange sweater dress with large buttons, and a floral button up sundress that is definitely channeling Cher from Clueless. Before I headed out I quickly scanned the shoe section and found two awesome pairs of leather huarache sandals. Though the Eagle Rock Goodwill may not always promise the best-of-the-best finds, it always provides a boring-free thrifting trip with a hint of bargain hunting anticipation.
