Since 2002, film freaks all over New York City, but especially downtown have had the special privilege of Cinema Nolita, a small but thoroughly stocked video rental store on Mulberry Street. As is the case all over the city, rising rents have forced the store into dire circumstances and it is on the verge of shutting down indefinitely. The proprietors have raised funds through special film screenings and parties with musical guests like Animal Collective and The Virgins, but are still short of the funds necessary to stay put. September 1st was d-day but CN is still operating, renting movies and seeking solutions. Donate whatever you can here or send them tips on cheap storefronts. Lord knows we still need a place where real people can look at us funny for renting the entire Gary Oldman filmography on a weekly basis (He’s crazy!).
