My favorite Def Jam Artist is easily Public Enemy. They spoke the language their audience understood and challenged young disenfranchised people to empower themselves. That and…Flava Flav…seriously, he can’t help but to stand the test of TIME. (badum chh) lol This evening is going to be one of the best Video Hits 1 productions of all time.

WHOA! Is this over? The Beastie Boys are my pick! They were the first group over for whose releases I would hit up my local record store at midnight on the day their albums dropped! My favorite Def Jam Artist would be Jay-Z. Throughout the years jay had always set trends and bars so high that many emcees took note and try to implement that in their careers. With hit record after hit record his consistency was unmatched. He along with dame and biggs brung you rocafella records which produce artist like memphis bleek,beanie sigel and kanye west. He along with ja rule, dmx and ll cool j brung the lable to the forefront and basically made it even a bigger commidity.

My favorite Def Jam artist is a past President at the company… Mr. Scarface…. As President of Def Jam South back in the day, Face made so many power moves for the south and held it down for folk who may not be on NY’s radar. He was instramental in the southern rise in early 2000′s Thank you Scarface and Def Jam.

my personal favorite def jam artist is rick rubin. he wasn’t necessarily the dancer, performer, the writer, the instrumentalist/turntableist. he was the provocateur. he was the selector. he was the andy warhol of hip hop in surrounding himself with expressive people who made a lot of individual statements. and what a bunch of statements. funny, serious, political, sexy. you can match an artist to a mood. a mindset. but he created a scene, a voice, a movement by coordinating those individuals loosely enough to be completely themselves. yet he had a master tastemaker sensitivity and visionary outlook that allowed everyone to see themselves AND where they wanted to be. he was the sunlight for the seeds of hip hop to grow as a global phenomenon. he let everyone in. a few court jesters. but no jokers. some girls and guys next door. some warriors. and some statesmen that didn’t know they were yet. but rick rubin outdid the master provocateur in electing to go with fresh genius to cultivate rather than fresh images to dispose. so i love andy warhol. but i love rick rubin more. he made a scene that was sustainable, shareable, growable, inviting. a place to bring people and watch them wander off and bring back something. and all respect to russell simmons. he embodies what a grown man on this earth should represent. balance of edge and responsibility. business and feeling. inner family and outer global view. rick is the master selector and russell is the mc. but it is all built on the foundation of the music rick rubin cultivated. my favorite artist def jam rick rubin. a grandmaster world landscape sculptor.

Although all Def Jam artists bring the truth and heat on stage…Talib Kweli is my favorite Def Jam artist for calling out all the bullshit of religion and false facts in which people chose to believe. “Hell” brought up so many points I can relate to, and “If we all God’s children than what the words of the Reverend worth”. Kweli always presents a new side to the story and continues to blow my mind.

My favorite Def Jam artist is Redman. When he said: “I smoke with a lot of college students/ most of them wasn’t graduating and they knew it” — I thought, he must’ve been in a smokeout with me, and I was so high I didn’t even notice. Regardless, he touched my heart with that lyric. No one cared about the sky-high, soon-to-be college dropouts like Redman.
