Freeload: Theophilus London, This Charming Mixtape
- story THE FADER
Brooklyn’s own Theophilus London has been recommended to us by a few different people, all of whom have a pretty stellar track record in this regard, so when his new mixtape came out on Friday, we took the weekend to digest it. And Theophilus proved himself to be good at more than looking wild cool on mixtape covers. He’s picked a bunch of oddball instrumentals — B’more remixes of Whitney Houston, Kraftwerk, Amadou & Mariam, post-punk we can’t place — that make it sound a little more personal than your average, but our favorite has to be his version of
Crazy Cousinz’ “Bongo Jam”. London raps a little and sings a little, and you could probably put him in a category with Kid Cudi if you wanted to, but it’s probably not that simple. For right now we’re happy just to watch dude blow up little fashion parties with Death Set.
