Contest: Win A CMJ Badge
- story THE FADER
If you’ve never experienced the New York City free-for-all known as CMJ, then you are in luck because we’re wearing about 50 badges around our necks (each!) and need to lighten the load. If you want to see every band ever pretty much for free, tell us about who you’d like to see most at CMJ in the comments and make sure to use an actual email address so we can find you.

October 5th, 2009 at 4:16 pm
Toro y Moi, because i love that dude & my abject hatred of south carolina precludes me from ever going there.
October 5th, 2009 at 4:31 pm
Midnight Juggernauts, The xx, and as many hipster girls that could possibly be seen at CMJ.
October 5th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
KOSHA DILLZ. MAYBE PITBULL. KOSHA DILLZ THOUGH, no doubt.
October 5th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
Is this a trick question? the answer is obviously Pitbull
October 5th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
mum and the very best (duh.)
October 5th, 2009 at 5:23 pm
I have a sever case of “Deer Tick”, need help….
October 5th, 2009 at 6:06 pm
All of the bands here are good, I’d like to watch em all!
October 5th, 2009 at 6:26 pm
I would really like to see Saul Williams, The Screaming Females, Pitbull, and pretty much most of the lineup. I love live music and would take full advantage of this chance to experience the music scene in NYC.
October 5th, 2009 at 6:35 pm
My boys “Baby Monster” because they are about to blow up in the U.K. and I want to catch them live before they become conceited assholes
October 5th, 2009 at 6:52 pm
hahaha did I see Busta Rhymes? Definitely want to see what he will do there! And A-trak, gotta love his remixes. The list is so long and so many bands I don’t know! Please help me change that..
October 5th, 2009 at 7:43 pm
Surfer Blood because I used to put on shows for their old bands (nina pinta and suicide youth movement) in my backyard in Miami when I was, like, 16 and 17. Jahdan and Shadetek because they’ll make my brain blow up from the bassheavy. Also, Herc and Love Affair because, yo, every once in a while you have a desire to dance like a diva.
October 5th, 2009 at 8:41 pm
I want to eat them with my spoon: Icelanders, Múm, and Vancouver’s best live post-punk duo, Japandroids. Experiencing the enchanted world of Múm and catch live their latest releases, “Illuminated” and “Sing Along” would set my soul free. Second, from countless of reviews, Japandroids have set the bar high enough for the audience to enjoy continuous sweat and thrill to their live performances. Japandroids have that perfect duo chemistry and the live reviews from various music blogs have made me incredibly jealous.
October 5th, 2009 at 8:43 pm
Fanfarlooo
October 5th, 2009 at 9:52 pm
Múm and The Budos Band – I loves them and have never seen either of them live!
October 5th, 2009 at 10:10 pm
holyshitPIGDESTROYER!!! oh, and seeing Saul Williams refuse to rhyme over tracks would be spectacular. hook a brotha up!
October 5th, 2009 at 10:30 pm
Margaret Cho because – wait, she’s in a band? Seriously though, I’ve seen every other band except Hercules and Love Affair, and I’d love to see them live. Seriously.
October 5th, 2009 at 11:26 pm
Um, Bear Hands, because I have yet to see them in real life and I live in the same city as them and there’s no excuse for that. And of course I would hate to miss MR. 305 himself.
Choose me.

definitely suzannah johannes’ first show in our neck of the woods.
October 6th, 2009 at 8:20 am
I’m definitely looking forward to Mum on my birthday! Also very excited for Screaming Females and Suzannah Johannes!
October 6th, 2009 at 10:55 am
I WANT TO SEE FANFARLO!!!!!
And Saul Williams. Always inspiring.
Help Fader Help!
October 6th, 2009 at 11:55 am
I’m psyched to see School of Seven Bells. I have seen the Secret Machines a bunch and had one transformative show at Warsaw that made me think they were a band destined for the sort of arena hugeness that Pink Floyd pioneered in heady, psychedelic rock back in the ’70s. I am hoping that School of Seven Bells can deliver on half that and, at the very least, will be a live experience for the books.
XX seem like they would be a fun band to see live too (but I’m sure everyone says that, right?).
October 6th, 2009 at 11:58 am
LOCAL NATIVES!!! Just two more weeks left!
October 6th, 2009 at 12:26 pm
Wild Yaks, since it looks like they might never tour. and Pitbull, just cause, i mean, it won’t be as great as MattsoReals rap showcases on the southside of Austin, but it’d still be pretty neat.
October 6th, 2009 at 12:29 pm
Margaret Cho!
October 6th, 2009 at 12:42 pm
i want to see the xx–i’m digging everything that’s coming out of the UK (like florence and the machine). can’t stop listening to the “you’ve got the love” remix. their songs are sexy but chill–can’t get any better.
i love the folkiness of deer tick, and warm heart of africa makes me smile so much (reminds me of k’naan a bit!).
and who doesn’t like being exposed to awesome music all around?
October 6th, 2009 at 3:04 pm
Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson… Ever since first learning about him from the cover story you guys did I have become a huge fan… His music has very inspirational in helping me kick my demons. Would love to fly out from Cali to support him and see him play live for the first time. Thanks for considering me a worthy badge recipient.

The Disciplines = Ken Stringfellow and the rockin’ Norwegians.
October 7th, 2009 at 12:11 am
I am excited for the possibility that I exist in the universe where P to the I to the T B U double the L and The Very Best perform together. I haven’t really understood what that means for the music they will make, but I don’t think Alfred Nobel knew he was making Dynamite.
October 7th, 2009 at 10:58 am
Looking forward to seeing some bands on the Park The Van label: Floating Action, Generationals, High Strung… Other than that I’d be thrilled to go from venue to venue just checking out things I’ve never heard before.
October 7th, 2009 at 11:58 am
Most looking forward to Adam Heldring (awesome singer/songwriter from Sweden), Awesome New Republic, Hockey, Zach Williams, and The Photo Atlas.
Would love to finally check them all out live and what better way to do that than… CMJ
October 7th, 2009 at 2:19 pm
Hey guys! Thanks for doing this…my fellow music director and I have been itching sooo bad to got o CMJ so we can check out the bands that send us stuff in the mail every damn day. This giveaway gives us hope.
But! I would definitely most like to see Dent May and his Magnificent Ukulele who I just found out is playing late Friday. I think seeing a Wes-Anderson-character-reject (as he seems to be) playing a tiny ukulele would be so wonderfully sweet I’d walk outta there with my first cavity. I play the ukulele too and Dent (who names themselves/names their kid that? cmawn!) is such an inspiration for a tiny lady with tinier hands
Laura Marling and First Aid Kid are also lovely up-n-comers
woo!
October 7th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
I’m really looking forward to the realest hip-hop showcase on the schedule: BB King’s freshest fest featuring The X-Ecutioners, Sadat X, Busta Rhymes, and more.
I sure could use one of those passes…hook a brother up!
October 7th, 2009 at 7:03 pm
Dearest Fader,
I would like most to see Broadcast because my love for them has endured the test of time and their sonic propulsions always conjure memories of sitting on the carpet of the room of my brother (r.i.p. 2/12/06). I have always been too curious to see what sort of magic Broadcast would project from the stage; my brother said that when he went to a show of theirs and found himself entranced by their aura.
I said he was stupid and probably on drugs.
I’d also really like to see Still Flyin’ because their ecstatic yelps are said to induce projectile vomiting.
Love!
-Y
October 8th, 2009 at 1:42 pm
I’m really looking forward to seeing the xx at Fixed, but I want to attend a whole slew of panels – it’d be exciting because I’m an alumnus of NYU and I fell in love with CMJ and the music industry while I was writing for the school paper years ago so now that the day events are housed at my old stomping grounds I am more hopeful to win.
I definitely want to see Broadcast, Pig Destroyer and Cold Cave and am sure there will be a lot of awesome label showcases.
October 9th, 2009 at 12:01 pm
Pete and the Pirates, because whats better than a Pirate? Numerous Pirates.
October 9th, 2009 at 12:06 pm
Suckers because they are my friends. Everyone should see them. Twice
October 9th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
I want to see the Dutchess & the Duke!! I tried to see them last year at CMJ but the show was full by the time I got there – which was BEFORE the show even began. I’m also excited to see Drink Up Buttercup – I saw them at a CMJ last year and they put on an awesome show.
Also – I live in NYC and can’t afford the hefty price tag of the CMJ pass. I’m kind of DYING to have one.
October 11th, 2009 at 5:10 pm
i would love to see mumford and sons!
their music is simply amazing.
the heart and soul that is in that music is wonderful!
October 12th, 2009 at 11:51 am
I would love to see Dum Dum Girls.
October 12th, 2009 at 12:08 pm
I would love to see the XX!!!!

October 12th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
Really excited to see Highlife, always love seeing Airwaves, and like these two ahead of me, also looking forward to Dum Dum Girls.
October 12th, 2009 at 2:33 pm
Besides the lovely staff of the Fader?
The Antlers. Because, every lonely person needs a good music-induced cry now and then.
October 12th, 2009 at 3:27 pm
I’d say The XX if they weren’t playing on the same night as my beloved Leonard Cohen. So I’d say Mum, because it is a long way from Iceland to NYC!
October 12th, 2009 at 8:13 pm
I’ve been wanting to catch The Depreciation Guild & Pete And The Pirates for a while. Would also love to finally see Múm.
October 13th, 2009 at 1:33 am
Warpaint + Choir of Young Believers
October 13th, 2009 at 11:11 am
If Fader is so kind to give me a badge, then I plan to see as many bands as humanly possible for the duration of the festival! Is the Fader fort on again for this year?
October 13th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
The XX for sure and Japanaroids.
October 13th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
I would want to see the Antlers just to find out how well their songs from Hospice translate live.
October 13th, 2009 at 4:59 pm
i want a cMj badge! i’m not the avid concertgoer, I AM the concertgoer! I like the XX and already saw them twice, same with School of Seven Bells. Saw Japandroids and don’t want to lose any more of my hearing to them. Ambulance Ltd., Fanfarlo, Crystal Antlers, Real Estate; been there done that several times. I do want to see XX, Beach Fossils, Mum, Atlas Sound all over again! I’m really excited about the newbies and the ones treading international waters to play! NEON INDIAN! Freelance Whales, Sin Fang Bous, Choir of Young Believers, Javelin, Nathaniel Ratcliff and the Wheel.
I could definitely use that CMJ badge so I can get some good music mileage out of it! Thanks for the chance Fader!
October 13th, 2009 at 5:53 pm
Music:
Jukebox the Ghost, Freelance Whales, Cale Parks, Neon Indian, Ambulance LTD, Bear Hands, Atlas Sound, Holly Miranda, Mumford & Sons, The Temper Trap, The Antlers, Crystal Antlers, Modern Skirts, Delorean, Pomegranates, all the Park the Van artists, The Dig, Emanuel and the Fear
Panels:
But the reason I’d really love a badge is because I’d like to attend some of the panels also. And by some, I mean as many as I can. As a music business professional who’s forced to work independently because of the recession and therefore has no extra money for a badge, it would be a blessing. I’d FLIP to attend Andrew WK’s panel.
Thanks for the opportunity!
October 13th, 2009 at 11:35 pm
