Video: Boy 8-Bit, “Baltic Pine”

December 16, 2009

Back when Mad Decent put together a tour with Abe Vigoda, Telepathe and Diplo, their somewhat strange pairing was made even more strange by the nerdy-looking, long red-haired dude named Boy 8-Bit who came along for the ride, too. Known mostly at that point for his remix of Burial's "Arcangel," which he gave a heavy backing beat suitable for dancefloor play, it was missed that this dude had some serious chops. "Baltic Pine," from the EP of the same name on This is Music, is a multi-part track, at its best when it drops the back beat altogether and floats off into a place populated by the experimental musicians of the world most concerned with ancient glockenspiels and air organs. Not content to let those dreamy, navel-gazing parts of the song expand and outwear their welcome, though, 8-Bit blends them with what sort of sounds like polka house. Or maybe Teletubby dance music. The happy toy video isn't helping us get away from that image, either—not that we really want to—but it's good that he's diverse enough to make stuffed rabbits, as well as people, dance. (via Fact)
