Unless Oliver Stone pulls a truly awesome 180 with the screenplay for Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps (that may literally have been a G-Unit mixtape already), there is no way this sequel will not tarnish its predecessor’s classic depiction of the money-grubbing ’80s. Wall Street wasn’t just about penthouse deals and betrayal, it was about KILLING YOUR DAD FOR A NEW DAD. That shit was like Star Wars for the aspirational set (everyone). What we see here: Gekko (Douglas) swagging up post prison sentence, antique cell phone sight gags, strained “No matter how much money you make, Mr. Gekko, you’ll never be rich.” (Like chocolate? What does that mean? How about “No matter how much money you make, Mr. Gekko, um, actually you seem pretty stoked on the direction of your life. Go for it.”) and a lead couple played by Shia Lebouf and Carey Mulligan (playing Gekko’s daughter) who actually look like juniors in high school. Maybe the movie will be about Gekko showering them with wedding gifts and spoils until they forget all their hard-learned priniciples (hence: “Call me Gordon”) and he wins with soft power and subterfuge. That would be awesome. That would be the story of the ’00s—suckering people into thinking the good life is easy. (via The Awl
