This is what would have happened if indie rock had not existed. Yesterday in our office we listened to a folk musician whose career is being nurtured by Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse. He could have been from any time in the last thirty years, quiet and acoustic. Not even bad but not even good. Theophilus London and Ellie Goulding, they went straight from Phil Spector girl pop to Run DMC to Madonna to the Cranberries to the future. There's even a little bit of wistful ’80s Stevie Nicks guitar towards the end. Creating their very own boy/girl duo, Goulding and London play well off each other over a simple but driving and effective piano and accordion beat. Neutral Milk Hotel be damned.
