Video: Big K.R.I.T., “Hometown Hero”

February 23, 2010

Besides the fact that this is a solid song and another entry that pushes Big K.R.I.T. just a little further out of T.I.'s shadow (although he still has the same hoarse rasp and sharp edges in his voice that Tip has), it's also an interesting, if somewhat indirect commentary on the state of rap right now. It comes off like a modest boast, and really, the hope is that K.R.I.T. will achieve national success (aka not just on the internet), but considering the way things are going that's a much more unrealistic proposition than it would have been just a few years ago. So "Hometown Hero" has him reveling in his local fame, his ability to be everything to everyone, and he comes off as both sure of himself and humble—which is really difficult to pull off, especially this early in his career.
