When you've been around for a decade, you're allowed to do loopy things like, say, doctoring your own samples and stringing them together to make ringtones. Xiu Xiu—creator of the said tones—thinks that's perfectly fine, and on the strength of Superhumanoids' remix, we'd have to agree. The chilliness of all the skittering, electronic hiccups, the distant, galactic synths, are mitigated by Superhumanoids' somber, yearning vocals, the handclap-as-percussion meme we never seem to exhaust or tire of, and the whomp-heavy bass that does a cool ripping-into-your-bones trick if you play the jam loud enough. And you should play it loud. That goes double for "Persona," from their new Urgency EP, a slow built-to-burst track of layers and alternating voices. You're supposed to be enveloped, man—that's part of the drama.
