Coast to Coast: LA Institution Family Bookstore’s Thirty Days NY

September 07, 2010

Though our current month has thirty days, it will not be quite as awesome when compared to April, when the Los Angeles-based Family Bookstore took over an empty storefront in Tribeca for a slew of night-after-night concerts, light shows and film screenings. We were able to visit the space with Family owners David Jacob Kramer and Sammy Harkham throughout the entire process of Thirty Days NY. These guys know just about everybody who has ever done anything remotely cool, and invited all of them to participate in the giant art project/shop. A few artists were invited to hole up in residence for a week at a time and create in public for all of lower Manhattan to witness. FADER TV talked to each and every one of them—including light show artists Joshua White and Gary Panter, sculptor/costume designer Meryl Smith, filmmaker Matthew Thurber, and musicians Aska, Butchy Fuego, and Lucky Dragons/Sumi Ink Club. Check it out and start your letter-writing campaign for Thirty Days NY 2011.
