Warpaint's The Fool was released this week and it is really, really, really good. It's patchwork pants in Vermont, winter hat in the summer, slap bass in the autumn, big drums in whatever season you have the most romance and breakups. What's so incredible about Warpaint is their amount of nonchalant propulsion, the inherent power in their explorative jams. Six minutes with a couple of serious prog rock fills and some ’90s California guitar noodle? Sure, why not? Actually, why is every band not that? We saw them play with The XX, their fun house mirror foil of minimalism and space, and the gust behind all of Warpaint's songs was the complimentary half of the yin yang. The little dot, that's the pause at 4:40 in "Undertow" (confidential to Jennifer Egan: sup!) These three songs, two from The Fool, one from their EP Exquisite Corpse, were recorded live for Rob da Bank's show on BBC 1. Wish we were there because, honestly, we know all the words.
