Trinidad Carnival 2011 Roundup: This Is As Close As We Got

March 08, 2011

On this the last day of Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago, we can't help but feel like we missed out on all the pageantry, booze, and bacchanal of 2011. Nonetheless we're amped to see some of our favs come out winners. Kes and the band won the Groovy Soca Monarch with Wotless. Kes started his performance in a three-piece lamé suit and ended it in pair of red basketball shorts, in true wotless fashion. Benjai came in second with the "Trini". FADER 43 cover boy Machel Montano said he was "Coming Again" for carnival this year. Clearly he wasn't joking as he took the two million dollar top prize for Soca Monarch. This video of Machel's Soca Monarch performance has us feeling like we were part of his entourage—it starts with a prayer circle backstage before he MASHED UP the show. Since we couldn't make it down to TT for all the slackness (maybe you're in the same boat?), we'll just download The Heatwave's Soca Season 2011 Mix, wave our flags/rags and tek a jump up in our bedroom. See you next year, Carnival!
