Secret Cities recorded their new album in the basement of an abandoned bank in Kansas City. There are a billion bad jokes in that, unnecessary midwest financial puns to describe how good Strange Hearts sounds. It just feels like missing the point to worry where this is coming from, like half the fun of having haunting, reverb-heavy, ambiguous-instrument pop is that it's from nowhere and no time. Two-and-a-half minutes in there’s a little organ/tape-hiss breakdown, it sounds so far away. They cymbals roll in for a triumphant final chorus, but it’s a weird sort of triumph where as soon as you celebrate your forget what it means to be happy. Let’s focus on that instead. Strange Hearts is out now on Western Vinyl.
