Spaceghostpurrp’s Blackland Radio 66.6 (1991) Mixtape

May 02, 2011

It's hard finding the right entry point to Spaceghostpurrp's Blackland Radio 66.6 (1991) mixtape, a sprawling 80 minutes of the South Florida MC/producer's greatest and most diverse work to date. In just the first three songs, there's an underground Triple 6 update ("Suck a Dick for 2011"), a Brick Squad beat with the chorus Possessed! Posessed! and a Wiz Khalifa diss track. The fourth track "Get Yah Head" is an instant standout, sampling Mortal Kombat and a scarily diverse collection of female screams, with a sedate but dense verse about monopolies and black ghosts. Its beat is nearly nonexistent, pays homage to Underground Volume 1's metal echoes, muted string plucks and sharp kick-drums. There are at least five other Spaceghostpurrp tapes you could start with—nearly a hundred other tracks recorded at wildly varying volumes, an entire mixtape tribute to screwed Nate Dogg, tapes with crazy back-to-back songs like "I Love Lean" and "I Love Lesbians." But Blackland Radio is the fattest. The moment it feels lacking, like you'd rather just watch old YouTubes and forget about new rap, Purrp goes in on an eight-minute "Stoner Gang" swagventure with Main Attrakionz and everything is right and wrong with the world again.
