Smith Westerns stopped by the A.V. Club to perform for their ongoing A.V. Undercover series, in which bands are asked to sportingly humiliate themselves covering popular classics. Tom Petty's "American Girl" seemed like the obvious choice for an all-American band like Smith Westerns, but, to lead singer/heartthrob Cullen Omori's great misfortune, Petty hits some deceptively high notes on that jam. Omori may be killing the girls with his shiny hair and youthful swagger at the rock shows, but he's murdering "American Girl" here. At least he's got a sense of humor about it.
