Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire’s Lost in Translation Mixtape

September 12, 2011

Over the weekend, Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire released Lost in Translation, a mixtape full of drunken, grimy, self-deprecating New York rap. There's production by El-P on here (including a couple re-purposed beats from Cannibal Ox’s The Cold Vein), as well as a lot of talk about being drunk and not stoked on yourself. Mostly though, it's exciting to hear a dude sing off-key, rap about drinking vodka constantly, reflect on his failure of a life because he glanced at his TV and saw and episode of Jimmy Neutron where Jimmy went into the future and saw that his future self kinda sucked. There are guest appearances, too, including show stealing verses from Danny Brown and the Das Racist dudes on a remix of "Huzzah." The natural tendency with this dude is to lump him in with other new New York rappers like ASAP Rocky, but he's coming from a different, darker place. It's not better or worse, just funnier and more depressing.
